ALL QUIET BEFORE THE FUTURITY: Is the isolated Newmarket meeting today still worth opening the gates? Little or no evidence that it is in demand by big breeders, who will do battle for the Doncaster Futurity on Saturday and have their sights set on the Breeders Cup. Headlines:

ITEM BALDING’S FINAL FLING

ITEM: the trainer’s title. The rise and rise of Juddmonte and the Aga Khan’s Stud will see the big-money stables in a closer contest in Europe next year.

The 2025 English title will be decided on Saturday if Ballydoyle’s Benvenuto Cellini can fend off the Juddmonte colt, Item, trained by Andrew Balding, and the top-rating, Oxagon (Team Gosden).

Aidan O’Brien is odds on. Despite only 30 winners, he is leading with £7.9m over Balding’s £7.1m for 184 winners, and the Gosdens £6.9m.

But the owners’ total earnings have Godolphin on £7.7m, a million or so more than the Coolmore syndicates put together.

And in France, Coolmore is third behind Aga Khan Studs, with Francis-Henri Graffard’s trainer total of €12.7m dwarfing O’Brien’s €4.5.

IS it still such a great idea? Today’s isolated Newmarket meeting, billed as Two-Year-Old Day, has only one race for that generation with eight or more runners, excepting novice events.

The maiden and the future-stayers’ nursery have only three or four left in and the ‘Two Year Old Day’ fills up with a fillies’ handicap for three-year-olds (4.08).

⭕ 4.08 Newmarket Maybe Not has stepped up from a class-5 success in June to two wins and twice runner-up, one of the seconds in class 2.

The two successes were both on AW but it could be argued that her best performance was a length off the winner in a field of 18 at the Ebor festival.

Donna Nook reminds me of a spot I know where boys fished for dabs (small plaice) to cook on the beach with fresh samphire (‘sam-fer’), seaweed which could be gathered from the shallows for free.

‘Fresh samphire’ (poshed up as ‘sam-fire’) now sells in a London fish restaurant at £14.50 as a side dish. Will I be dining there? Maybe not.

Naga may improve from low level, just as the claimed-off Orangesandlemons did stepping up to class 2 at Nottingham, with the give in the ground in her favour.

A big filly who could progress, Silent City’s success on today’s course has been let down by the runner-up. Biniorella Bay has won only her maiden, always a bad sign.

QUIESCENT ON A SEQUENCE

⭕ 5.18 Newmarket In the absence of Reverberate, I’m taking Quiescent, who has won at the trip, including here, on both firm and soft and is on a hat-trick, trying to emulate her sire, Pinatubo? Six in a row, you may recall.

⭕ 7.40 Kempton Synergism, a winner here in August, aimed way too high in the Mallard at Doncaster, but was disputing second two out, the race won by Listed-level Subsequent from Cesarewitch winner, Beylerbeyi.

As a three-year-old, he gets up to 23lb from the older horses, and comes out of the same stall as last year’s winner.

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
