DEAFENING NATIONAL TEST

They think it’s all over! Dan Skelton is almost £3m clear of the holder, Willie Mullins, for the British trainer’s title, but we are reminded that – Cheltenham apart – the Grand National was key to last year’s result.

Mullins had winner (£500,000), second (£200,000), third (£100,000), fifth (£40,000) and seventh (£20,000) at Liverpool.

This year’s race on April 11 has his first three entered again: Nick Rockett, I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West, all due to line up first in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on March 13.

One of three Skelton aces for Aintree could be on the card for Saturday’s Haydock Park Grand National Trial. Deafening Silence was among 12 acceptors yesterday.

The choice for Panic Attack is between the Ryanair and, more likely, the Mares Chase at Cheltenham on Thursday and Friday, 12 and 13 March.

The third big-name Skelton possible at Aintree, Grey Dawning, steps up in trip for the Gold Cup test a month before the National, for which the weights will be announced in London next Tuesday.

IT’S MADNESS

⭕ 4.14 Southwell A State Of Madness has done well since joining the Charlie Clover stable – not finishing out of the first four in six starts.

He looked a little unlucky at Kempton last time out when a close-up third though losing a lot of ground by running wide. Despite the big field this class 5 might not take much winning.

Blue Lakota is up 2lb for his narrow Newcastle win last time out and should be in the mix again whilst at bigger odds course and distance winner Vince Lombardi is only up 1lb for his 7f Wolverhampton win last time out and is arguably better over today’s shorter 6f trip.

HAS THE MEASURE OF THEM

⭕ 4.28 Kempton The stayers get to strut their stuff here over the two mile course.

Cynthia didn’t show much in two AW starts when trained by James Horton and the filly now makes her first start for David Pipe who has his string in good form with four winners from their last 13 runners.

I just prefer the chances of Further Measure who won four in a row last season but has paid the price with the handicapper.

He’s now gradually slipping down the weights though and there were very positive signs last time out at Southwell where he was a staying on fourth over 1m 6f giving every indication the extra distance tonight will suit.

D Day Arvalenreeva is hard to weigh up. She showed promise when third over this trip at Chelmsford in November but flopped on her return to the track in January when beaten 25 lengths into fourth place.

STILL SHINING

⭕ 6.40 Kempton I’m staying loyal to All Moonshine who landed a winning 6/4 nap for me on Betdaq Betting Exchange last month.

That was just her third start (311) and the Andrew Balding trained filly should have scope for further improvement especially now stepped up in trip to a mile.

She starts life in handicap company off a mark of 80 but is much preferred to the equally rated True Colors and Mollie Foster.

Biggest danger is likely to come from Jazzy Baby who won a maiden here last time out in good style.
