BOOKIES IN SMASH-AND-GRAB RAIDS

Punters beware! On-course bookmakers at the bigger meetings are filling their satchels in the very first race as insurance against a favourites’ day.

It happens regularly at some tracks and is an old Bank Holiday trick, as you can see from this list of overrounds in Monday’s SP percentage totals (first race on the left):

EPSOM: 124%, 115, 117, 116, 109, 112 then they got out on 122% in the last.

RIPON: 122%, 109, 112, 113, 117, 123, 123 (four favourites in a row won so punters had to pay with a bigger bookies’ ‘take’ on the last two races).

You have been warned but best, of course, to be on at BETDAQ morning offers, which are interesting to compare with the Musselburgh SPs, where there were complaints at the last meeting that the bookies were too zealous in making sudden hefty ‘takes’, notably a 132% overround, not in the opener but in a five-runner sprint (race 3)!

MUSSELBURGH (August 9th): 112%, 116, 132, 117, 122, 125, 116

I looked for some improvement at Musselburgh last night by comparing the Total SP with the offers on BETDAQ (at 1pm):

MUSSELBURGH (August 27): BETDAQ: 102%, 107, 107, 109, 108, 106, 105

MUSSELBURGH (August 27): Total SP: 110%, 114, 120, 115, 116, 119, 113

BETDAQ had the best odds on 97% of races on ITV Racing from January to July in 2019 and in 100% of races live on ITV at the Ebor Festival.

I recommend punters everywhere to prove it for themselves: check BETDAQ offers and BETDAQ XSP against the Total SP bookmaker percentages published each day in the results.

There’s absolutely no point in starting your day as a loser before you’ve even had a bet!

DRAWN TO KODI AT LINGFIELD

3.50 Catterick Plenty of these appear to be running back into form, including Fuente who ran by far his best race of the season last time out over course and distance when runner-up to I Am A Dreamer.

Whilst that run came on soft ground, he seems just as effective over a faster surface as he proved at Ayr last season when his only career win to date came on good ground.

His trainer Keith Dalgleish couldn’t be in better form with 7 winners over the past 14 days (19% strike-rate).

Sparklealot won three times last season but has been in the grip of the handicapper so far this season.

Lamloom ran a shocker in the Carlisle Bell when last of 16 but bounced back with a better effort at Beverley last time out and multiple winner Luis Vaz De Torres could be better suited by the quicker ground than he faced last time out when third over course and distance and looks the biggest danger.

4.30 Lingfield The draw advantage at Lingfield over the seven furlong course is one of the most pronounced in the country and even in a small field you want to be drawn high.

In pole position here is Ask Siri (drawn 7) but he has plenty to find on the form book with Mr Kodi (drawn next best in 6).

The pair contested a six furlong race here earlier in the month and Mr Kodi finished 10 lengths in front of Ask Siri when the pair finished 5th and 10th.

‘Kodi’ sports the first time visor today and on just his fifth racecourse start is surely capable of further improvement? He was staying on well over the six furlong race and can see out the extra furlong from a good draw here.

Stable companion of the selection (and NAP) is Lets Go Lucky who has more to do from stall 2. She makes her nursery debut having only shown modest form in three starts and is likely to need a further trip in time to produce her best form.

4.55 Catterick Spirit Of Zebedee has plenty of ticks next to his name – not least of which stall 2 for a runner that likes to race prominently.

He’s a three times course and distance winner (including this race in 2017).

He was a good course and distance third last time out on soft ground and off the same mark should take plenty of beating here.
