MATCH IS PUNTING PENALTY

⭕ 3.35 Ascot, Saturday (Clarence House Chase) This £150,000 Grade 1 has Ed Chamberlin ‘drooling’ about a clash between Shishkin and Energumene, according to the Racing Post.

Ed is reported as saying: ‘You’ve the best from Britain taking on the best from Ireland in a head-to-head clash, they’re both unbeaten over fences and from two of the big powerhouses. It’s got everything..’

Well, not quite ‘everything’; it hasn’t even got enough runners to give you a place bet on an outsider; it’s yet another duel, fun to watch but offering you little value in the market and not very much about future form, sometimes nothing at all unless ground and pace are fair to both.

That’s revealed in that seven of the last nine winners have been favourite, five of them odds on, right up to 1-10 Altior. Last year’s 14-1 winner, First Flow, was a rare outsider, beating hot-pot Politologue.. Oops!

Was that shock a guide to the Cheltenham Festival? (No; First Flow was sixth of nine) or the Punchestown version? (No; First Flow was sixth of sixth). And Politologue hasn’t won a race since.

SKY FORM BOOSTED BY THYME

⭕ 1.50 Newbury today Colin Tizzard’s yard has had three winners in the last nine days, and his Amarillo Sky beat subsequent easy Doncaster scorer Thyme White (Bennys Bridge third) when they met at Wincanton in November.

Light N Strike has stuck to the better ground and been consistent as a result: not out of the first three in six races, since heavy ground at Wincanton in February spoilt his chance.

But all his placed efforts (one win) have been in class 4. Goa Lil also scored at that level in a novice event at Stratford in the summer. Son Of Camas might improve for blinkers.

ALL SMILES AT 16.0 ON BETDAQ

⭕ 3.00 Newbury Keep Wondering is consistent without putting two wins together and his best form is on heavy ground, so I fancy it’s between two who were down the field in the Mandarin here over further just after Christmas.

With Adam Wedge booked on his best chance of the day, Wayfinder is back on his winning mark (under James Bowen) and entitled to come on for his two runs back.

Bowen rides Landofsmiles, who had a break after winning the Perth Gold Cup (off today’s mark) before third of 16 in the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter.

BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE 5.7 Wayfinder, 16 Landofsmiles

STAY CALM: HAVE A GRAN BET

⭕ 3.30 Newbury This is a rerun of a mares’ race over the CD at Newbury three weeks back but on soft, where today’s ground is officially good to soft.

With only a head between them, winner and second, Gran Luna and Voice Of Calm, were both raised 2lb. Gran Luna, who needed the race, made the running until two out, then came again on the line.

Megan and Pogo I Am were four and more lengths behind and their form profile and couple of pounds help from the handicapper don’t inspire.

Gran Luna’s form figures at Newbury are 111. She has won over further and I expect her to force the pace again over the bridesmaid Voice Of Calm (form figures 222 since raised 9lb for scoring at Cartmel a grade lower in May).

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
