⭕ 1.50 Newmarket Pocket The Profit, by Abernant winning sire Mayson, has been hiked 11lb for his Pontefract win eight days ago, but gets under the radar with just a 6lb penalty.
🤔 LAYS LOGIC Against him is the ground – he likes plenty of give – and the 12 draw throws him out wide. Half a dozen off the rails, down the centre, did best yesterday, and Ryan Moore will have to earn his money, if he is to win this.
📊 FORM: It’s a race I’d normally leave alone but arch-rival Pricewise is keen to take me on with Loves Me Likearock.
Though I’m a follower of her trainer, Charles Hills, particularly in sprints, the grey filly has been upped 8lb since she weakened out of a Listed here 166 days ago. She also has a double-figure stall (10).
Sean Woods, who has the Shalfleet Stables at HQ vacated by Jeremy Noseda, is striking at 44% this year, currently with three winners from seven runners.
He has booked Tom Marquand for Princess Shabnam.
With two wins last summer, the only races she’s lost since August were two at Group-3 level, one of them the Cornwallis here on the Rowley Mile, when forced to race on the outside from stall 12.

SEA JUST START OF A BIG CATCH
⭕ 2.25 Newmarket (Wood Ditton Stakes) RULE No 4 (the first three rules appeared in Monday’s Daqman): follow the first half dozen home in the Wood Ditton Stakes.
Winners used to be guaranteed but had a lean spell until, in the last two seasons, it has produced 10 and 11 winners successively.
If you want a bet today, follow the draw (double-figure stalls 9-10 down middle to far side) and have a pound on I Am The Sea from a yard that’s won this twice in nine seasons.
But I shall be looking for not one but 10 winners from the race! By following the first six or seven home (there’s usually a gap of several lengths which separates the future players from the dogs).

RIVER TO RUN FAST IN ABERNANT
⭕ 3.00 Newmarket (Abernant Stakes) It takes a very smart sprinter to win this, such as Magical Memory (2016), and in the last two years Oxted and Summerghand have gone on to take a Group race, won or been placed in a big handicap.
A three-year-old has not won since 1996 and only three before that scored since 1969.
But Ebro River won the Phoenix Stakes and was placed in the National Stakes, both Group-1 juvenile tests at The Curragh.
He led in both those races, not an easy thing to do today in the wide-open spaces of Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course, and not jockey Jamie Spencer’s forte.
However, the winner in his National Stakes third was Native Trail, one of Charlie Appleby’s 2,000 Guineas favourites.
Garrus is suspect. He won first time of asking in two of his last three seasons and again scored after a break last summer but he was disappointing, fourth at 15-8, when returning at Doncaster last month, and is now a six-year-old.
Bellosa, dual winner here over 7f, drops back to six, tongue-tied. Jumby is also two out of two on today’s course.
But he needed his run at today’s meeting last year before scoring at the Guineas meeting, and his stable is currently without a winner for 20 weeks.

3.5 VALUE ON THE GUINEAS TRAIL
⭕ 3.35 Newmarket (Craven Stakes) EARLY BIRDS: Al Mubhir, Claymore, Native Trail and Star of India all scored on their debut.
📊 RACE STATS The 2018 winner by nine lengths, Masar, trained by Charlie Appleby, subsequently won the Epsom Derby.
📊 FORM Appleby today saddles Native Trail, one of his 2,000 Guineas pair, with Coroebus actually edging favouritism on BETDAQ. Should Native Trail win today as he should, the 3.5 offers will go quickly.
Native Trail won the National Stakes at the Curragh (that was his hat-trick) and then the Dewhurst here at Newmarket over a furlong shorter than today’s mile.
Appleby had followed the same route in 2019 with another Godolphin star, Pinatubo, who would never again win in England or Ireland, starting with a 6-5 on defeat in the Guineas.
Point Lonsdale, second to Native Trail in the National Stakes and among the first four in the Guineas betting, is represented here by Aidan O’Brien stablemate, Star of India, a 2,000 outsider bred to get further.
Kingmax connections were looking for a boost yesterday from Tacarib Bay, who beat him in a maiden last May but Tacarib Bay was well held by New Science in the Free Handicap.
ALDOUS HUXLEY BOOKED FOR WIN
⭕ 4.10 Newmarket Godolphin can hardly lose this forgettable novice event, with Aldous Huxley (BETDAQ 2.66) saddled by Team Gosden and two – New London and Cosmic Desert – sent out by Charlie Appleby, who has won three of the four renewals of the race.
Forgettable? It’s another Daqman warning about three-year-olds: none of those three Appleby-trained past winners of this novice event won another race in England or Ireland; they scored only twice more in total, a handicap at Meydan and Listed at Longchamp.
But, hold your horses, what is my old sparring partner, Simon Rowlands, trying to tell us when he declares: ‘Aldous Huxley is my Horse To Follow for the year ahead’? Just the one, Simon?
Stats are pretty much anathema to him so let’s hope they are wrong about the winner of this race.. A brave new world, in fact!
