🏇 DAQMAN AT SANDOWN FOR NINTH NAP: Daqman has landed 25 winners in the 19 days of July. Tonight’s nap at Sandown would be his ninth best bet to win in that time.
KING GEORGE FORM AND STATS
⭕ 3.35 Ascot, Saturday (King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, 1m 4f, Group 1)
STATS: It has taken a Derby or an Oaks winner to capture the King George as a three-year-old, with one exception among the seven second-season colts and fillies to win this since 1994.
There is no 4yo runner this year (11-13 between 2004 and 2016); five-year-olds have won six since 1988; and the only six-year-old winners since 1951 (Swain in 1998) and Enable (2020) were completing a sequence, double and treble respectively.
TRAINERS: John Gosden 5, Aidan O’Brien 4. JOCKEYS: Frankie Dettori 3. FAVOURITES: 40%. DRAW: Stalls 3 and 4 have jointly won 50% in the decade.
125 Mishriff (J & T Gosden 5-9-9): blinding form in 2020-21, including winner of the French Derby and the Sheema Classic. But just one win in six starts over the last year, taking the York International (1m 2.5f) six lengths; second to Adayar in the King George.
Third and close second (just failed to progressive Vadeni) in the last two runnings of the Eclipse. Hard to leave him out, hard to see him winning.
125 Torquator Tasso (Marcel Weiss 5-9-9): The Berlin Grand Prix one-two of 2021, Alpinista and Torquator Tasso, were not beaten after in four Group-1 events, including the Arc, and both are back to form again this year.
Earnings to date: Mishriff £3.9m, Torquator Tasso £2.9m, Broome £1.4m.
120 Westover (Ralph Beckett 3-8-12): The Classic careers of the two three-year-olds, Westover and Emily Upjohn, are hard-luck stories.
There are those who think Westover might have won Desert Crown’s Epsom Derby but for being ‘hampered and no clear run’. I was not among them but added Westover to my Fortune Cookies to take the Irish derby as compensation. He did but by only seven lengths from Piz Badile, who was 16 lengths behind Desert Crown in the Epsom Derby.
119 Pyledriver (William Muir & Chris Grassick 5-9-9): Often in at the finish in Bahrain or Hong Kong but the entire’s only Group 1 strike in a 17-race career remains the 2021 Coronation Cup at Epsom when he beat then Group-3 winners.
117 Broome (Aidan O’Brien, 6-9-9): Broome’s only Group-1 win came on the soft at Saint-Cloud a year ago but he was back to form in a Group 2 in June and his best day out was probably his half-length second in the Breeders Cup Turf in November (firm).
117 Emily Upjohn (John & Thady Gosden, 3-8-9): the second hard-luck story for the three-year-olds came the day before the Derby when the giant-striding Emily Upjohn just couldn’t make up the many lengths lost when stumbling at the start of the Oaks under Frankie Dettori. Easily made up the ground three out but not enough left in the finish, beaten a short-head.
WOWIE! IS SHE LOWTHER CLASS?
⭕ 7.00 Naas (2yo-fillies’ Listed) There’s a standout here on form at home and on the track in course-and-distance winner Mauiewowie, talked up as having huge potential.
The rest of the field is Listed level on what we’ve seen but she is reckoned a prospect for the Lowther Stakes (Group 2 at York).
The worries are that Mauiewowie has raced only once and that her easy success here in turning over an odds-on favourite was on soft ground. BETDAQ 2.59.
⭕ 7.55 Leicester (7f fillies) Nikki’s Girl is living off success over the Leicester course and distance when nothing wanted to set a pace and she won in slow time, despite the firm ground.
Mistrix has similar form: just the one win, able to lead off a slow pace a furlong out and win nearly five seconds above average time, despite good-to-firm ground at York.
The eight-year-old mare Eponina wins once or twice a year and seems to have had her diet of success this time around, including over today’s CD.
Granary Queen is consistent and seems sure to place but I’m going to try Silent Flame. Rod Millman’s filly has been kept to 6f most of her life but she is bred to do well over 7f and is unexposed at the trip as a mature filly. BETDAQ 5.9.
FRAN RACE HAS BEEN BOOSTED
⭕ 8.08 Sandown (1m 2f handicap) It’s not often Charlie Appleby finds one difficult to place and he finally resorted to a hood on the maiden Cosmic Desert. That didn’t work either.
The step up to today’s trip paid off for Maytree Respite – just – by a head at Newbury. Dal Mallart likes slow horses and slowish ground around him so I’m not sure he can rise 9lb and two grades higher for scoring at Haydock.
Frantanck had future winners in front of him and a winner behind when third at Newmarket in June. The step up in trip for his first handicap is interesting. Betdaq Betting Exchange 2.25.
