TODAY: Ballydoyle big-race plotting takes Illinois to the front of the St Leger betting. PLUS Southwell nap this afternoon.
LOS ANGELES CHAMPION MOVE
AIDAN O’Brien rocked three ante-post markets yesterday. The St Leger, Irish Champion Stakes and Arc de Triomphe are affected by a day of decisions at Ballydoyle.
In the last decade, the Leger has been more or less gifted to winners of the Irish Derby, Great Voltigeur or Queens Vase.
This year’s winner of the Curragh Derby and Royal Ascot key race was the same horse, O’Brien’s colt, Los Angeles (pictured below).
But yesterday the master of Ballydoyle switched Los Angeles to the Irish Champion Stakes, with Ryan Moore facing the choice between the ace three-year-old and last year’s winner of the race, Auguste Rodin.
It follows a decision to make Los Angeles the Ballydoyle number-one for the Arc de Triomphe.
These momentous moves in the high-stakes autumn chess game leave Queens Vase winner, Illinois, as their top St Leger hope and new favourite.
O’Brien has previously trained Leading Light (2013) and Kew Gardens (2018) to win the Queens Vase and follow up in the St Leger.
HURRAH FOR RAHEENA
⭕ 2.53 Southwell An ignominious start to the Wednesday Southwell card with a match between Andrew Balding and a Charlie Appleby trained debutant.
Not much that can be done about it but two high profile southern yards fighting out a winner’s prize of £3,402 is a pretty grim reflection on the state of the industry.
Thankfully things get a little more competitive for the next race on the card – a fillies handicap over the mile.
It’s rare to see a hat-trick seeker trading at around 70.0 (mid morning on Betdaq Betting Exchange) but that’s what we have here with Beautiful Dawn who makes her debut for Derek Shaw having won two of her three starts for Joseph O’Brien when trained in Ireland.
It’s hard to know what to expect here given it’s her first start for 203 days and this is competitive and probably a much better race than the class 4 tag might indicate. Certainly the market has well and truly dismissed her chance.
Raheena should prove hard to beat on her handicap debut. Trained by the Crisfords, she showed significant improvement on her first all-weather start when winning nicely at Kempton last time out and should be suited by the step up from seven furlongs to a mile here.
Her starting mark of 86 is workable, whereas main market danger Eleftheria might just need some relief from the handicapper judged by her course, distance and grade sixth last time out.
GOOD KNIGHT NAP
⭕ 3.23 Southwell Minstrel Knight looks worthy of the Wednesday nap vote against serial bridesmaid Aulis whose career CV reads 63-7332222.
Minstrel Knight is trained by Edward Bethell who has his yard in pretty good form (3 winners from the last 18) and this one improved for the step up in trip to win going away at Carlisle (1m 3f) in June. He’s up 5lb but should relish the extra furlong and more in time.
Aulis is tried in a visor but as I said earlier in the week on the same subject of horses with frustrating sequences how much is this desperation rather than inspiration?
I don’t want to be unkind as his actual form reads very well in the context of this race, especially a Newmarket second last time out but his temperament might be a bigger issue. His Newmarket comment in running included: “wandered around and carried head awkwardly over 1f out”.
ONE EL OF A CHANCE
⭕ 6.45 Hamilton heavy ground and 1m 5f – I like a stamina challenge !!
More importantly so does Elforleather who is on for the hat-trick after wins at Ffos Las (heavy) and Windsor (soft) over slightly shorter trips.
He wasn’t stopping at the end of either race and a 2lb hike in the weights looks (handicapper please look away now) most lenient !!

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
