DAQMAN EYES NAP AT THURLES: Prizemoney, the Grand National, football betting and staking plans all come under the Daqman eye today, and there are more Daq Multiples with one horse each at Catterick, Lingfield and Thurles (nap).
MAYBE FIVE MEETINGS TOMORROW: We lost Bangor today but five meetings may survive tomorrow through sunshine and showers at Fakenham, Thurles and Warwick, with Southwell on fibresand and Chelmsford on Polytrack.. and with Daqman again hunting down the class acts for quality bets.
TRACKS NEED TO BOOST PLACE PRIZES
Don’t be frightened of one horse! That’s always the view of ‘us experts’ in the stands, when an awesome favourite appears likely to scare off most of his challengers.
But racing may have to go the way of the Chester initiative and pay handsomely for its runners, and at the same time make sure there is place money worth going for.
That should have the knock-on effect of bigger fields and warming the bookies to shelling out more for the privilege of taking your money.
Willie Mullins has realised that our big prizes are there for the taking and the declaration of Djakadam for Saturday’s Gold Cup trial (as reported by Shamrock yesterday) might decimate it.
It will be Willie, won’t he, until the final decs.. Meanwhile Mullins price for champion English trainer is bound to shorten with this latest news of his further attack on the English scene.
25-1 SHOT CATCHES MY AINTREE EYE
Look ahead with BETDAQ! Talking of prices, I see that there are ante-post-orange offers on BETDAQ now open for exchange right through to the 1,000 Guineas on May 1.
Cheltenham has a lucky-13 race list covering the whole four days (I’ll be looking at those next week), and sandwiched between Flat and festival is, of course, the Grand National.
I just glanced at my month-by-month notes of what to look for, and saw that, under the Aintree National, it said: ‘previous Hennessy Gold Cup winner.’
So, without prejudice, I pondered on the prospects of the 2013 Hennessy winner (at age of only six), Triolo d’Alene, 25-1 generally for April’s big race. I’ll take a look at that, also next week. Update please, Mr Henderson..
I’M A FOREST GUMP AT FOOTBALL TIPS
MULTIMAN has the most difficult job. Just two runners, you might say (three if you count the draw) but it’s the devil’s own guessing game (the pit or the pendulum) to get football results right in a year of no outstanding team.
How he managed to trap Levante doubled with Burnley, I really don’t know? Wbatever their form chances, that was a bit like doubling the winner of a seller at Southwell with a camel-race favourite in Dubai.
Then yesterday….
I had a hunch on Sunday. I thought Chelsea, who often score with tap-ins, might beat Arsenal, for the simple reason that they like short-passing the ball in their own penalty area. Vulnerable or what!
The result will be bragging rights for a while until a little bird starts whispering in my ear: what about that bloke who’s got 5,000-1 Leicester for the title? I shall refuse to believe it and cry: ‘Urban soccer myth!’
Foot(ball) note: I have supported Nottingham Forest since I was knee high to Brian Clough so, when they also won 1-0 at the weekend, a dream double passed me by.. I’ll stick to what I know.
RARE STAKE FOR PLACE NAP AT THURLES
Great interview with Declan Meagher. And for those of you new to my own staking tactics, I’ll be reviewing the subject before Cheltenham. Meanwhile:
I BET with a stake of 1 to 9 at poor-quality race meetings
I BET On days of class-3 races or better, I will stake to win 20 points at the offers taken on BETDAQ
I BET to win 30, 40, 50 (bull’s eye) or even 100 (ton up) at the quality meetings
CATTERICK There are two class-3 races at Catterick today, with Evan Williams taking the van all the way up from Welsh Wales with Poulanassy (2.25).
Poulanassy has already done nearly 1,200 miles to land a double at Sedgefield and Catterick, and was a winner over today’s CD six weeks back. I’m sure Evan’s accountant will be pleased when Hereford reopens!
There used to be an old system (‘system doing well; send more money’!) in which you hunted down in the form-book those horses which led TWICE during a race.
The idea was that, if a pacesetter had a breather and came back through the pack to win, he was a horse you could ‘put anywhere’ in a race, and also was clearly being ridden with confidence.
Poulanassy did just that here on the last day: led to 6th; chased leaders and led again last 150 yards.
Tomkevi won over a similar trip at Haydock and has bags of experience, and the stable’s had four from four placed, still standing, in the last fortnight.
But the horse was very easy to back this morning and maybe Forest Bihan is a bigger threat, better than the bare form, now dropped a grade.
But I’ll stick with Poulanassy in his first handicap off a seemingly handy mark: I’m asking for 2.8 to grab my 2% commission.
LINGFIELD The class-2 Coral handicap (3.10) looks tasty for handicap piunters (I confess, I’m one.
Aleator and Brocklebank are old rivals, finishing in front of each other in November and December. Will t e blinkers work a second time on Aleator? Freud is on a hat-trick.
However, it was 6.0 bar one on the BETDAQ orange as the money came for Franklin D, lightly raced and potentially on the upgrade for Michael Bell.
THURLES Perhaps the only recognisable quality horse running today is old Goonyella (3.25). Not so much of the ‘old’; though he seems to have been around for donkeys years, he’s still only nine.
Goonyella loves the mud and, though set 11st 12lb., in fact has a featherweight compared with his chase rating: he’s 24lb lower over hurdles.
The 7.6 in the BETDAQ orange seems a little crazy. I shall rate the place part of my win-and-place bet as the nap. I shall target 20 points for both the win part and the place part.
DAQMAN’S BETS (each horse staked to win 20 points, except Daq Multiples)
BET 11pts win POULANASSY (2.25 Catterick)
BET 10pts win FRANKLIN D (3.10 Lingfield)
BET 3pts win and 8pts place (nap) GOONYELLA (3.25 Thurles)
DAQ MULTIPLES: 3 x 1pt win doubles and 1pt win treble the above three.
