LADIES’ DAY IS EVEN MONEY

⚠️ HEADS UP: Ascot admits ‘a worsened forecast’ for Saturday, with sinking temperatures and hopes reduced; but Haydock is reckoned ‘50-50 with all at-risk areas under covers.’ Wolverhampton remain hopeful for today but need another inspection at 11.30am.

⭕ 2.40 Haydock, Saturday (Peter Marsh Chase): Is it ladies day again? If Haydock survives on Saturday and Ascot doesn’t, all eyes are on the Peter Marsh Chase, shared by two women trainers four years in succession and five seasons out of seven.

Both these winning yards are recent ever-presents in the race and have probable runners on Saturday: Sue Smith, whose Peter Marsh form is 1F311 since 2016 and Venetia Williams 24411.

But, in fact, Sue also won in 2000 and 2004 and Venetia Williams in 1999 and 2007. So the score is Sue 5, Venetia 4 in the last 20 runnings of the race.

Sue and husband Harvey Smith had their highest-rated winner with The Last Fling (153 in the year 2000) but Vintage Clouds was hiked to 154 after taking the 2020 Peter Marsh off 143.

Royal Pagaille has won the Peter Marsh in the last two years for Venetia Williams off 156 and 163, carrying 11st 10lb on each occasion.

He swerves a hat-trick bid on Saturday, with stablemate Fontaine Collonges preferred, though rated only 137.

The mare, set only 10st 4lb off that mark, won narrowly at Haydock in November and ran fourth to Remastered at the Kempton Christmas meeting.

Sue Smith could run the outsider Small Present (only 127 rated), a hurdles winner twice at Haydock who revealed bags of stamina when third to Bangers And Cash in the Lincolnshire National at Market Rasen on Boxing Day.

THE BENSON BURNER

⭕ 3.15 Wolverhampton Jenson Benson might be the answer to this class 5 handicap.

The Shaun Lycett trained runner comes into this on the back of a solid effort at Chelmsford last time out when he was nibbled at in the market. It was a strong effort in a better class 4 event.

There are plenty of rivals in form which helps make the market for us. Fast Style bids for a hat-trick on the flat (two pulled up efforts over jumps being the sandwich filling) and whilst a winner at Newcastle last week he only just scrambled home and the 5lb penalty makes life much tougher.

I thought Giorgio Vasari looked a bigger danger after a good run last week and he is also a course and distance winner here.

EXPRESS LOOKS THE TICKET

⭕ 4.25 Wolverhampton Mick Appleby did us a favour yesterday with Mehmo and the stable should land the finale here with Jupiter Express who is owned by The Horse Watchers who often go for a tilt in the ring.

Betdaq Betting Exchange layers are unlikely to want to push this one out too far though. He was a winner in this grade on the 9th January and is out again quickly after a below par effort here on Monday in a class 5. The fact he is out again so rapidly is interesting in itself and he should be too strong for Big Impact who has been dropped a couple of pounds but has generally struggled since his course and distance win last November.

HERE’S A GEM

⭕ 7.45 Southwell Both George Boughey and Kevin Stott are in great form at present and they combine here with King’s Gem who makes his debut for the stable after joining from Sir Mark Todd.

After an inauspicious start at Goodwood he improved to run better races at Windsor and Ffos Las and it would come as no surprise to see him improve for the move to Boughey who seems to have the magic touch at present.

Shot Of Love, Katar and Ignac Lamar will all be waiting in the wings if he fails to fire with Katar perhaps looking the biggest danger for the Craig Lister stable who have scored with two of their last three runners.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
