NOW FOR THE FIRST DAY AT YORK: The Ebor meeting at York kicks off with a tremendous triple of Acomb Stakes, Great Voltigeur and a Juddmonte International featuring Paddington, the top horse in training.. but can he hold on to his crown? Daqman assumes the going is on the firm side in this coverage of five races.

EQUILATERAL HAS THE CLASS

⭕ 1.50 York (sprint handicap) STATS: Seven winners out of 10 drawn 10 or lower (2013 onward: 15, 15, 5, 5, 8, 18, 10, 9, 3, 2). TRAINER: Kevin Ryan (3).

➕ POSITIVE: Course-winner Alligator Alley (gate 9) has dropped more than a stone since February, and has won three times on firm ground.

Copper Knight (CD), out of stall 6, is 100001131000100000001 here at York on good, good to firm and good to soft..

Bergerac (CD) prefers good, good to firm: won this race last year from stall 2 and now comes out of 10 off 3lb lower in the ratings for Kevin Ryan. Aids (cheekpieces) back on today; likes to front-run.

Course-winner Nomadic Empire, fourth out of stall 15 last year, is now 9lb lower, out of 3. Likes good, good to firm.

Makanah, 5th from the one stall that day, was unlucky in running but stall 20 may not help his luck today.

Equilateral (12) is the class horse, dropping out of the Pattern for the first time since he won a handicap at Meydan in January 2021, with 11 Group starts in the meantime. Head-waiter Jamie Spencer rides. Likes top of he ground.

➖ NEGATIVE: Korker (7) likes a sound surface and is 132 at York since being gelded but is 7lb higher than his last success. Needs a career best.

Mondammej (2) has had 12 straight defeats at York. Intrinsic Bond (5) is 8lb higher than his last strike.

Kuwait City, Looking For Lynda: 3yo don’t win this. One Night Stand hasn’t won on turf for more than two years.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 11.5 Alligator Alley, 12 Equilateral, 20 Bergerac, 22 Nomadic Empire

BOY! BIG ROBERT PAPIN BOOST

⭕ 2.25 York (Acomb Stakes) A massive £93k prize for the winner which has lured two future Guineas stars, Chaldean (Newmarket this year) and Phoenix Of Spain (Curragh 2019) in the last five seasons.

It’s not normally a race held hostage by Aidan O’Brien. He hasn’t won it since the year 2000 but Team Johnston who farm the race (five winners) don’t have a runner this year.

Blocking O’Brien’s powerful-looking Edwardian in the bid to find a Guineas winner in this today are Ballymount Boy and debut winner, Cogitate.

As winner of a four-horse maiden at Hamilton, we would hardly have considered Ballymount Boy but his subsequent Richmond Stakes second to Vandeek looks hot after that one got up in the final strides on Sunday at Deauville.

He beat French filly Ramatuelle, who had won the Robert Papin, and O’Brien’s Coventry Stakes star, River Tiber. Ballymount Boy 3.1 on BETDAQ this morning; 5.4 Edwardian.

GREGORY FUTURE CUP HORSE

⭕ 3.00 York (Great Voltigeur) Race history, stats and form preview in Daqman yesterday.

Gregory (Frankie Dettori) has improved every race and looks like a St Leger winner with a future in the Cup races next season. Better than evens on BETDAQ this morning.

Continuous, third in the Dante here, has failed to score this season but races with an immaturity which suggests the best is yet to come. Best form on soft.

Castle Way is a favourite of William Buick’s and he could step up on his level of form. It’s a ‘done nothing wrong’ situation but his stable hasn’t been engaging the same gear of recent seasons.

Artistic Sar, seventh in the Epsom Derby, is held by Continuous on Royal Ascot form.

PADDINGTON IS EXCEPTIONAL

⭕ 3.35 York (Juddmonte International) Superstars of this race include Dahlia and Troy way back in the Seventies, and in this century Sea The Stars (2009), Frankel (2012), Postponed (2016) and Baaeed (2022).

Aidan O’Brien (6) and Team Gosden (2) are winning trainers with runners today. Leading jockeys include Frankie Dettori (5) and Ryan Moore (2).

1: PADDINGTON (Aidan O’Brien, 125) FORTUNE COOKIE. Thrives on his racing and is exceptional, says Ryan Moore, who has ridden him to five of his seven wins in a row, from a 97-rated handicap winner to hero of the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Eclipse and Sussex Stakes on ground ranging from good to heavy.

2: THE FOXES (Andrew Balding, 113) Progressive Royal Lodge winner, found the Epsom Derby a bit far after a stumbling start but won the Dante over today’s CD on firm, and the winner of the Belmont Derby had to be ridden out to hold him by a length, also on firm.

3: MOSTAHDAF (John and Thady Gosden, 128) By Frankel out of a Dubawi mare, the senior player, already winner of £1.8m, and ridden by Dettori.

Has scored over 1m 4f, but much prefers this quarter-mile or so shorter which won him his first Group 1 at Royal Ascot in June, readily beating other older horses. Likes to bounce off good ground.

4: NASHWA (John and Thady Gosden, 118) By Frankel out of a mare by soft-ground sire Pivotal. Prix de Diane and Nassau Stakes winner for Hollie Doyle last year, but not so effective this time round, taking time to come to herself, and best form back at a mile in Newmarket July-course Group 1.

ROBERT JOHNSON FIRM FANCY

⭕ 4.10 York (stayers’ handicap) Interesting jockey bookings here: Ryan Moore for Tony Martin on soft-ground player, Zanndabad; Saffie Osborne for Dermot Weld on Grappa Nonino (likes cut in the ground); and the head waiter again, Jamie Spencer, on Themaxwecan (firm) for Team Johnson, winners of this race twice in the decade, with Joe Fanning in the saddle.

That leads me to Tronador – Joe Fanning switches to that one – and that leads me to Robert Johnson.

After scoring at York (2m) in July, Robert Johnson came from a mile out of his ground to finish second at Goodwood over an extended 2m 4f with Tronador, also in rear and not clear run, in third.

Tronador has won only with cut in the ground, well beaten twice on firm, but Robert Johnson has scored on most surfaces, including three times on firm.

BETDAQ value 7 Robert Johnson, 17 Themaxwecan

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
