WHO CAN JOIN THE OAKS 100 CLUB?
3.35 York (Musidora Stakes) Today’s Musidora heroine will get a 100-plus rating today. My winner comes from three notionally rated in the nineties.
Their BETDAQ Oaks ante-post bets today: 18.0 Sparkle Roll, 20.0 Entitle, 23.0 Frankellina.
If you fancy one of them now, get on, and you might be able to trade some ‘overs’, when offers shorten in the market.
But I have to say that the last three winners of this York trial have been disappointing (total overall form afterwards, just one win from nine starts), apart from Star Of Seville (2015), who went on to win the French Oaks, the Prix de Diane.
Michael Bell’s Epsom Oaks winner Sariska (2009) was the best Musidora winner of the last decade. Michael’s Pretty Pollyanna misses today’s race, and, seemingly, the Irish 1,000 Guineas (May 26), with Royal Ascot next instead, a choice between the Commonwealth Cup sprint and the mile of the Coronation Stakes.
John Gosden likes York for his trials ground so are we to assume that Sparkle Roll or Entitle – or both – are better bets for Epsom than Mehdaayih and Anapurna? Officially, they need at least an 11lb hike to catch up on their stablemates today.
92 SPARKLE ROLL (John Gosden), Kingman half-sister to Derby winner Wings Of Eagles, she won at Sandown in April, which gives her a fitness edge.
90 ENTITLE (John Gosden) has won only a modest Lingfield novice and this is her reappearance run but Frankie Dettori’s on board, no doubt hoping she gives him the same feel that her half-sister Enable did at the start of a great career.
90 FRANKELLINA (William Haggas), daughter of Frankel related on the dam’s side to Golden Horn. Could be anything.
I took a bit of 7.2 Entitle on BETDAQ for today’s race, perhaps with a bit of sentiment about the Enable connection. If I don’t get a godsend from Gosden, I might at least save my stakes on stablemate Sparkle Roll.
CRYSTAL-CLEAR STOUTE IMPROVER
1.50 York Ryan Moore riding for Sir Michael Stoute won this back to back (2013-14) and Crystal King is an unbeaten 2-2 since gelded, improving more than a stone.
Fujaira Prince is also on the upgrade, what else of a hat-trick winner. But, as a Pivotal, he might need rain and not be so hot on the firm ground.
First Eleven drops back from Group company but has to give Crystal King very nearly a stone, and Corgi is a bit of a bridesmaid with four seconds out of six starts.
Stealth Fighter needs to improve for the step up in trip, and that’s possible on breeding. Collide could need an easier surface.
I took 8.4 BETDAQ offers about Crystal King, and decided it was a day to risk the winnings from five naps and five supernaps. So, a bull’s-eye nap (i.e. to win 50 points).
NO SECRET YET 22.0 BETDAQ OFFERS
2.25 York Only once in 10 years have Yorkshire trainers allowed this sprint handicap to be poached from the South, but to the surprise of punters, it seems. No clear favourite has won, and five of the last seven SPs have been double figures.
The usual suspects are here – Richard Fahey (two runners), Tim Easterby (3), David O’Meara (3) – and I’m warned not to ignore Nigel Tinkler, also with three, including four-time winner Whinmoor and three-from-six scorer Citron Major.
Aljady, the 7.2 BETDAQ favourite this morning, may be the pick of Fahey’s pair. Any improvement for being gelded could get the four-year-old a 100 rating.
Staxton (Easterby) and Intisaab (O’Meara) have weight concessions for their defeat by Reputation at Ripon in April.
I took the early-mouse 22.0 about the grey mare Sandra’s Secret, who landed a hat-trick pertinent to today’s race. Ridden by Silvestre De Sousa just three times in her life (returning 111), she has won in May for the last two seasons, and is a CD winner at York, including on firm ground.
YAFTA POISED TO JOIN SPRINT STARS
3.00 York (Duke Of York Stakes) The trouble with York is they love giving you tricky sprints to solve! We’ve just had one for handicappers; now here’s a 6f Group 2 but is there much of a difference?
A conditions race should be easier – just follow the ratings – but, assessing them all as if carrying 9st., we have 106, 104, 103, 102 and 101. That’s only marginally more than a length and a half covering five horses.
Brando is the 106 standout, receiving weight, as they all are, from Limato, who is a venerable age now and carries a penalty here. Brando has always been a beaten hero at York (form on the course 0322002).
Only Abbaye winner, Maarek (2014) has scored aged seven, and that was with the benefit of his beloved soft ground.
They should have the legs off that age group – Limato, Brando and George Bowen – on today’s surface. But who has the legs?
The market says it’s Invincible Army, a Group-3 winner, pushing Major Jumbo out to 11.5, after their one-two in the (Listed) Cammidge Trophy.
The Palace House Stakes and the Abernant would normally decide the market leaders here at this Group-2 level but that’s just the point.
Major Jumbo put them all in a heap by running Mabs Cross (the latest Abbaye winner) to two lengths, staying on, in the Palace House over a furlong shorter than today.
The edge between handicappers, Listed and Group horses was further blurred when Brando, going for a hat-trick in the Abernant, was beaten by Keystroke, albeit the third home, Yafta (hampered), had already won a Group 3. Do the maths and these sprinters look even closer than that one and a half lengths!
In these cases, you’re looking for improvers and you’re looking for track or ground preferences. I fancy firm-ground specialist Yafta at 5.3 on BETDAQ. After Flippa The Strippa, it’s gotta be Yafta for an equine BAFTA!
