WEDNESDAY EFL CUP: We preview MAN U v MAN CITY in the EFL Cup match tonight at Old Trafford. Both sides are coming under pressure in the League with Chelsea putting four past Man U and Man City now five games without a win.
Manchester United v Manchester City
7.45pm Manchester Derbies will always be interesting, but what could have been an ordinary League Cup night has turned into a pretty important game with both managers under a bit of pressure at the moment. Jose Mourinho’s United were spanked the weekend against Chelsea while Pep Guardiola is having to defend his tactics in every press conference at the moment having gone five games without a win.
Obviously, much like last night’s clash between Liverpool and Spurs, both managers will choose to rest at least some of their first XI given that is the popular trend for the League Cup these days, however given the situation it’s entirely possible we get pretty strong teams. Mourinho has certainly surprised us with relatively strong teams in the Europa League thus far this season in-between important Premier League games, and you could question now was that the right thing to do, but hindsight is wonderful!
Apparently Pep Guardiola kept his players back after the 1-1 draw to Southampton at the weekend, and you would have to expect a strong reaction from them, and given that they dominated the first half of the league clash here, its surprising to see City as big as 2.96, with United 2.66 and the draw 3.45 – you would have thought City would have been a bit shorter given their resources if both teams rest a few players.
It’s highly likely that Mourinho sets up quite defensively here after seeing what Southampton and Everton have done to City at home, the problem with that though, like the weekend against Chelsea, is an early goal and your game plan is up in smoke. We feel that there are a lot more situations going in City’s favour here prior to seeing the teams and the 2.96 is too big to ignore in the market.
On the goals front, bar an early goal we can expect a slow-ish start, both teams are low on confidence and the first 20 minutes could be cagey – under 2.5 goals is currently trading 1.96 which is certainly an option for a trade, although it might be better to wait for the teams before getting involved in that one.
