WAITING FOR BETTER VALUE ON WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: Tuesday was a wild night in the Champions League but Wednesday and Thursday give bettors the chance to fight back big time. Let’s pick some winners.
The Special One tops the bill tonight and bettors are wary because Chelsea don’t need to win to progress. In Paris St Germain they face an opponent that is desperate to rule Europe. So desperate in fact that it paid crazy money for David Luiz in the summer. PSG hungers for the Champions League the way Roman Abramovich did back during his first relationship with Jose Mourinho. Like Taylor and Burton, they are giving it another go and so far so good.
The market is downright terrified that Mourinho will keep it tight and settle for the 0-0 draw that will send Chelsea into the next round. Away goals however are vastly over-rated, with few clashes in Europe actually coming down to that tie-breaker. Mourinho knows this all too well and will be in no mood to park the bus for the full 90 minutes against a French outfit that knows how to score. I simply can’t see Chelsea being content with eschewing attack. The EPL leaders are good enough to take charge and get the win on the night. Bet on Chelsea at 2.16 to win.
The other Champions League game on the board tonight sees an unbackable Bayern Munich team look to break the deadlock and sweep aside Shakhtar Donetsk in the Allianz Arena. As is almost expected from a Pep Guardiola team, Bayern failed to impress in the away leg but bettors are smart enough to know that home second legs are where Guardiola gets it done. To find value, we need to look away from the main event market. You simply have to like Bayern to score and keep scoring in this one. I’m going for a total that would indicate a rout. Bet on Over 3.5 goals at 2.36.
Finally we switch to Thursday’s Europa League action where Everton host Dynamo Kiev. There are two things to bear in mind here. Firstly, this is the only game in town for Everton this season. Secondly, Roberto Martinez is just the type of manager who can turn a middling season into a Champions League spot via alternative means. Nobody’s talking about that danger to fourth in the EPL yet because it’s still early stages in the knockout stages. Nobody was talking about Djimi Traore winning a Champions League medal in March 2005 either. At this price and this manager, there’s only one option. Bet on Everton at 2.38 to start the chatter.
