EMMET RYAN’s previous column gave two great shouts and almost had the perfect weekend on the Premier League with just Arsenal letting him down for a fantastic treble. However, he correctly tipped for the Draw/Man City in the Half Time/Full Time result on Saturday before giving Over 2 Goals in the Liverpool – Crystal Palace game. He previews this week’s vital Champions League games for some of the English Clubs.
One English club can win its group on Tuesday, two others are fighting for survival in a big week of Champions League betting.
Liverpool’s Champions League fate is an awful lot like their league title push last season. From here on out, they have to win and keep winning. Ludogorets gave Brendan Rodgers and company a fright on the opening night of group play but the Bulgarian side has bigger concerns back home than this competition. Trailing CSKA Sofia by 5 points in the title chase and with a big game against Lokomotiv Sofia on Sunday, getting back to this competition next year is already becoming a challenge. Throw in the fact that Ludogorets still have to play 332 km from its home arena and the shape of this challenge changes dramatically.
Still, for all the shine this season has taken off them, Liverpool are still Liverpool and that’s the type of scalp any underdog will want to take. I can see the first half being particularly tight but not enough to stop Liverpool going in ahead at the break. Talk Liverpool/Liverpool at 3.05 on the Half-time/Full-time.
Despite being bottom of their group, Man City don’t necessarily need to win tonight against Bayern Munich. They will however know by kick-off as CSKA Moscow host Roma at 5pm. If that game ends in anything other than a draw, City must pick up all three points against Bayern to have any hope of progressing. The Germans, with maximum points through four games, are already certain of going through to the knockout stages. That should give Manuel Pellegrini’s side cause for hope as they have the attacking talent necessary to take this to a Bayern side that may lack motivation. It’s going to take a lot of luck for City to progress but I like them to still be breathing for the final round of games. Go for the upset and take Man City at 3.65 to win.
Chelsea travel to Gelsenkirchen tonight for a clash with struggling Schalke. The German side, currently 7th in the Bundesliga, has been inconsistent year to year of late and the signs so far point to this being another down season. A win tonight would leave Jose Mourinho’s side with a dead rubber in the final round of games, with first place and progress already secured. That points to Chelsea going for this one early, as much as Chelsea really go for games. With the outright looking a bit tight, take Chelsea/Chelsea at 2.92 on the Half-time/Full-time in this one.
