EURO 2021 BECOMES EURO 2021: UEFA have made the decision to move Euro 2020 to the summer of 2021.
It seems to be a very sensible decision given the situation. In truth, their hands were tied given the tournament was set to be hosted around Europe. Now the question is, how long will the football season be suspended and what do domestic leagues do so they don’t bump into Euro 2021?
The tournament will now run from the 11th of June 2021 to the 11th of July. Obviously it’s excellent that the tournament has been saved, but it also brings a number of other issues.
If the domestic season doesn’t return soon, when and how will they finish that season? And if they do that – does the following season bump into the Euro’s?
Perhaps domestic Cups will have to be cancelled for the 2020/2021 season to allow domestic leagues to finish quicker – freeing up the summer for Euro 2021. In an ideal world, the Premier League could return on the 4th of April onwards but that looks increasingly unlikely at the moment given the UK Governments dramatic U-turn in recent days.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin (pictured right) said: “We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent.
“It is at times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity and altruism.
“The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and in that spirit, Uefa tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football.
“There was a real spirit of co-operation, with everyone recognising that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result.”
Ceferin said it was important Uefa “led the process and made the biggest sacrifice”, adding it comes “at a huge cost” but “purpose over profit has been our guiding principle in taking this decision for the good of European football as a whole.”
Adding further to the difficulties is the Uefa’s Nations League and the European Under-21 Championships are also scheduled to take place next summer. Along with the 2021 Uefa Women’s European Championship is set to take place in England and begins on 7 July, four days before the proposed men’s final which is in Wembley.
