EURO 2020 QUALIFIER: We preview Tuesday’s Euro 2020 Qualifier between SWITZERLAND V REPUBLIC OF IRELAND with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
SWITZERLAND V REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
7.45pm What a huge game in Group D. Ireland still sit top of the Group after a draw with Georgia on Saturday but that was a game that they really needed to win. They are four points ahead of Switzerland, but Switzerland have a game in hand. After tonight, Switzerland are home at to Georgia and away to Gibraltar – two very winnable fixtures while Ireland will only have one game against Denmark who are currently in second on the same amount of points as Ireland.
You can see just how important this fixture is for Ireland. A loss would more than likely see Switzerland and Denmark go through given the fixtures left. By the time Ireland play Denmark, it’s likely Denmark have 15 points and Switzerland have 14 (should they beat Ireland) with Ireland only on 12 and needing to beat Denmark. It was a surprise to see the tactics employed against Georgia given the situation – surely Ireland should have “gone for it” more against Georgia, compared to having to attack teams like Switzerland or Denmark.
Another thing to factor in for Ireland is two draws isn’t good enough. A draw here would see Denmark on 15 points and top of the Group, Ireland with 13 points and Switzerland on 12 with a better goal difference by the time Ireland play Denmark and Switzerland play Gibraltar on the last day (should results go to form with Denmark and Switzerland against Georgia and Gibraltar). A draw against Denmark wouldn’t be enough in the last fixture. Ireland simply need to beat Switzerland or Denmark; or hope they slip up somewhere else. In that regard, Ireland will obviously be looking at Switzerland v Georgia, but Switzerland have home advantage and will be comfortable odds on to win.
The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Switzerland 1.58, Republic Of Ireland 7.2 and the draw is 4.3. It’s fair to say that Ireland are better away from home compared to at home. Having too much of the ball doesn’t suit them – as odd as that sounds in football! They aren’t creative enough; they need to counter attack and then get 11 men behind the ball to protect a lead.
Given what we have seen thus far in this Group; there’s unlikely to be many goals here. Ireland’s mindset appears to be all wrong given the situation in the Group looking at their tactics on Saturday, and it’s hard to see how they can beat a team like Switzerland if they couldn’t beat Georgia. We like Switzerland to win, however from a betting point of view we prefer under 2.5 goals at 1.67. It’s hard to see too much goal chances here given Ireland’s style of play and with that price bigger than Switzerland; it looks the value in the game.
