RUSSIAN GP PREVIEW: The 2017 season has settled into a readable pattern after three races. Ferrari vs Mercedes, Sebastian Vettel vs Lewis Hamilton, and Red Bull somewhere in between that battle and the midfield.
During today’s qualifying, Sebastian Vettel ended Mercedes dominance in qualifying at the Russian Grand Prix, taking pole for Ferrari in Sochi, the first time the Silver Arrows have not occupied the top spot since the race was first held in 2014.
His team-mate Raikkonen was in second place, completing the first Ferrari front-row lockout since the French Grand Prix at in 2008. Lewis Hamilton struggled to match both drivers and finished in fourth behind his team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
Vettel who has taken pole position for tomorrow’s race has shown the best race pace in the pack and duly leads the Championship as a consequence. There was little precedent for Ferrari’s two wins this year at both Australia and Bahrain, how and ever, they succeeded with aplomb and looking at today’s qualifying results, clearly Ferrari now have resurgent form.
The mystery of both Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikonnen’s listless starts to this season is a point of interest. Their outright race win odds continue to drift as do their chances of featuring in this season’s Championship run in, that being said, they’ve the same cars as their esteemed and superiorly perceived teammates. Watch this space as there’s value to be had.
Elsewhere, the Russian track will require serious grunt to get around in a competitive way. We can discount Honda power, Renault power, and 1 year old Ferrari power. So you can chalk off the following teams from troubling the higher spots on the grid for both qualification and the race for Sauber, Toro Rosso and Renault.
