GAVIN CROMWELL: BETDAQ brand ambassador Gavin Cromwell looks ahead to his runners over the weekend including Princess Yaiza in the Noblesse Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday.
It’s great to be back racing again and although the new protocols take a bit of time to get used to, everyone has respected them. There is some good action over the next few days including the Irish 1000 and 2000 Guineas and everyone is just relieved we’re back in action.
Princess Yaiza – Noblesse Stakes, Leopardstown
We’re really looking forward to running Princess Yaiza in Sunday’s Noblesse Stakes (4.10pm) at Leopardstown. She’s in good form and although this race is a month later than planned and now at Leopardstown as opposed to Cork, this was always her first target of the season.
There are only 10 entered in the race and she’s the top-rated which shows the chance she has, but this is very much a stepping stone for further down the line. There is a really nice programme for her and with any luck she can show what she did for us a couple of years ago. There’s three or four races which look perfect targets for her and then hopefully if all goes to plan we’ll finish with a tilt at the Group 2 at Longchamp she won in 2018 (pictured below).
She’s showing us all the signs that she’s still a top-class mare and the fact she isn’t penalised for Sunday’s contest means she looks the one to beat.
Saturday Curragh
We run three at the Curragh on Saturday all in the 2m handicap (4.00pm).
Tritonix won a bumper and a maiden on the Flat for us last year and she’s in good form ahead of this. She’d probably want a little bit more ease in the ground to be seen at her best, but she’s been going nicely at home and this looks a good place to start.
Mutadaffeq won a beginners chase the week before racing was stopped. He’ll go back over fences once we start jumping again, but this looks a nice opportunity to get a run into him on the Flat before that.
Severeus Alexander is first reserve, but with any luck he’ll get in. We’ve put the cheekpieces on which we think will sharpen him up a bit and we’d like to think two miles around the Curragh will suit him well.
They all will need to improve to be up to winning this, but it’s a competitive race and all go there with a squeak.
