GAVIN CROMWELL: Brand Ambassador Gavin Cromwell previews a busy weekend for his yard at both Galway and Kilbeggan.
Galway Friday
We kick things off at Galway on Friday with Walking The Walk and Broken Ice in the maiden hurdle (4.45pm). The former was a touch disappointing in a bumper the last day having run well in a couple of point-to-points previously. He’s better than that and hopefully he’ll show that here.
Broken Ice ran well in a weak maiden hurdle at Bellewstown before disappointing badly the last day at Downpatrick. He’s probably up against it based on that run.
Ruinous goes in the following handicap hurdle (5.45pm). He was well-beaten in a weak race last time and although he’s been dropped in the weights for that, his mark still looks on the high side. We’re pitching him in his first handicap off a mark of 115 and we’ll know where we stand with his mark afterwards, but we do think he’d prefer a slightly sounder surface.
Next up is Bentham who runs the handicap hurdle (5.45pm) after winning nicely at Bellewstown last time. He might want better ground, but we’re hopeful he’ll get through it anyway. He’s in good form at home and we’d like to think he can run a big race.
Flooring Porter goes in the Grade B handicap hurdle (6.15pm). He really showed his battling qualities last time and it was a good performance considering he was quite keen early on. He’s gone up eight pounds for that which makes things tougher, but he’ll love conditions and he should go really well. I’d say he’s one of our best chances of the week.
Ming Dynasty makes his second start over fences in the beginners chase (6.45pm). He was a little unlucky the last day as he ran into trouble with loose horses and one fell in front of him at the last. He’s another who would probably prefer a sounder surface, but he doesn’t go there without a chance.
Our final runner on Friday is Static Jack in the Blazers handicap chase (7.45pm). We’ll see how much rain falls as he wouldn’t want it really testing. He’s in okay form, but needs to improve to be competitive here.
Kilbeggan Saturday
Railway Hurricane was disappointing in a bumper at Limerick the last day. We couldn’t really find a reason for that poor run so we’re getting him out again in the maiden hurdle (2.50pm). Hopefully we see a better horse here.
Whirling Dervish and You Say Nothing take their chances in the maiden hurdle (4.00pm). Whirling Dervish hasn’t really shown it on the track yet and has been quite disappointing in truth. We’ve thrown a tongue-tie on him here which hopefully has an effect but he needs to improve.
You Say Nothing makes his debut for us. He looks up against it and is one for further down the line.
Galway Saturday
Back at Galway, we run Yafordadoe in the 1m handicap (3.45pm). He won very well over hurdles last time and is back on the Flat here. He has course form having won here in October last year. The ground will be in his favour and we’re hopeful of a big run again.
White Pepper runs in the auction maiden (4.45pm) under Wayne Lordan. That run at Gowran wasn’t too bad and we’re turning her around quickly here. We thought this test would suit and fingers crossed she can improve on that debut performance and run a nice race here.
The 1m4f handicap (5.45pm) is a much weaker race than we thought it would be. We run Call Me Dolly who was a good second at Limerick on her only start this season. We’d hope she can come on from that here and be competitive.
Aasleagh Fawn also runs in the race. She’s been largely running well this season, although we’re not sure how much room to maneuverer there is off this mark. Like Call Me Dolly, she should have a nice each-way chance.
