Hi guys, Glen Johnson here. I’m really excited to be working with BETDAQ ahead of the new football season. This is the first of my weekly blogs where I’ll be discussing all the hot topics as well as giving my selections for my weekly accumulator.

Community Shield

File photo dated 04-07-2019 of Manchester City’s Rodri

I played in two Community Shields and while there’s a trophy up for grabs, players see it more as a final pre-season game. There is obviously a bit of spice because you’re playing one of your rivals, but it doesn’t have quite the intensity of a normal season game.

It’s obviously a very exciting time of the year. Players have been off doing different bits over the summer and now they are getting back to doing what they love doing. Everyone wants to get off to a winning start and while this game doesn’t carry quite the importance of others, both sides will still want to win.

I just fancy City as they’ve signed another top player in Rodri (pictured right) and Liverpool have struggled a little bit in pre-season for goals. Jurgen Klopp has had a few of his players away for long periods too, so I’m not sure if the likes of Salah, Mane and Firmino will all play. Their absences could just tilt it City’s way.

Hard to see past City, Liverpool in title race

It’s hard to see any other side breaking into the top-two of the Premier League. Manchester City and Liverpool were so far ahead last season and it’s a big ask for any other team to bridge the gap.

At the same time, I think it’s going to be hard for Liverpool to get past City. That’s nothing against my old side, it just shows how good City are. Liverpool had pretty much the perfect season last year and still came up short, so how they are going to improve on that, I don’t know.

It’s obviously a bit of a worry for Liverpool that they haven’t signed anyone, but I’d admire the way they do their business now and it’s clear they haven’t been able to get the targets they wanted. It’s not ideal, but at least they haven’t just spent money for the sake of it.

Gerrard Liverpool manager one day?

Playing alongside Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, it was clear that he had all the attributes to be a manager. He absolutely loves the game and reads it so well. I think the fact that he’s gone straight from playing to managing shows he’s been planning it for a while and he showed for periods at Rangers last season, how good a job he can do.

To have him and Lamps both managing is a great for English football and it shows there is plenty of space for these young English managers in the game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Stevie ended up as the Liverpool manager. That would be the pinnacle for him and that’s obviously a long way down the line with Klopp doing so well, but I don’t see why he won’t do it one day.

Jamo on Strictly!

I must admit I was pretty shocked when I heard the news Jamo was going on Strictly Come Dancing. I’ve been on plenty of nights out with him and I can assure you it’s not pretty! I’m looking forward to seeing him though, it will be a good laugh and I wish all the best with it.
