GLEN JOHNSON: This week former Liverpool defender and BETDAQ ambassador Glen congratulates champions Liverpool and explains why they can dominate English football for years to come.
Liverpool will stamp authority on English football
I’m over the moon for my former side Liverpool winning their first Premier League title and first top flight title in 30 years. The celebrations were quiet for me as it was late and the kids were in bed, but I’ll celebrate properly soon.
It’s been a long 30 years for the club to wait, but I think it’s probably the biggest title in their history and one they will cherish for a long, long time.
They have an unbelievable manager in Jurgen Klopp, and he’s confirmed his status as a legend for the club. If he’s at the helm for the next few years doing what he has been doing, they will be extremely hard to stop and they can create a dynasty.
Jurgen said “this is just the beginning” for the club, and I think they can definitely stamp their authority on English football and add to this trophy haul over the next few years.
They’ve shown unbelievable passion and desire to overcome the disappointment of coming so close last season, and everyone was expecting them to experience a hangover from the last campaign but they’ve done the complete opposite and blown every team away.
If they can maintain that form and mentality then they will go on to be a force over the next five seasons. The next target is equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 titles, and I think they can go and beat that.
Delighted for ‘most important player’ Jordan Henderson
It’s a shame for the Liverpool team and supporters not to be able to celebrate this win properly due to everything that’s going on, but their time will come and nobody can take this win away from them.
People who say there should be an asterisk next to their name don’t have a leg to stand on. Liverpool have been the best team by far this season and they were always going to win it.
I’m so happy for everyone associated with the club. I’ve got loads of friends still there, neighbours and other people who I’m so happy for. And in particular my old teammate Jordan Henderson, who has been so important for them this season.
If I had to pick one player who epitomises this Liverpool team it’s Henderson. He won’t win games by himself, but his attitude and the way he motivates the team has been so crucial to this side.
I didn’t really think he’d go on to become a Premier League winning captain, but it just goes to show what work rate and desire can do. When we played together he was trying to break through, but you could see his passion and commitment and it’s amazing to see it all pay off.
Expect Reds to break the points record
Liverpool winning the league hasn’t been a shock, as they have been ahead for so long. Their players will take time to enjoy it, but given they have seven games left to go and break a few Premier League records, that is now their motivation for the rest of the season.
It’ll absolutely be in their minds to go one better than Manchester City and beat that record of 100 points. They are in a fantastic position to do so, so why not go all out and try to achieve it? I think they will do it.
Klopp still needs to strengthen – and they need a number 10.
Liverpool have finally sorted their recruitment policy and are buying the right players for the team to fit into the group and their system. So I expect them to get it right in the summer again when the transfer window re-opens.
If I had to say the area they could strengthen, it would be a player to play in the number 10 position. You can’t always rely on a front three to score all the goals, so you need someone who can come in and chip in with a handful of goals ever year.
