JONATHAN HOBBS: We’ve reached the semi-final stage of both the Coral Sussex Cup and Coral Regency and, supported by the heats of two competitions, tonight’s RPGTV-broadcast Hove card is an all open-race bonanza – and hopefully a few winners are listed below!
The dilemma for punters in the Sussex Cup is whether to go ‘heavy’ on Bockos Doomie in his semi. Patrick Janssens’ dog was outstanding the previous week in a prep race but was hard-pressed to win last week after a missed break.
A quick exit and this leading Derby contender could and should win comfortably, but the speed of Killeacle Gus next door needs handling – plus the superb King Lennon sits next door to him. It’s a cracking race where the value might actually lie elsewhere. Read on.
Hove
6.09: The first heat of a bitches’ dual distance event and Droopys Proven catches the eye. Ernie Gaskin’s lightly raced sort caught the eye in a Towcester sprint last month and has since trialled well. Stamina is taken on trust but a lead looks on the cards.

6.58: Bockos Doomie is the most likely winner if coming away and dominating. He’s just top drawer. However, Seamus Cahill’s Forest Alan is still so hard to ignore, especially having almost gone round in front last week. Winetavern Curly could be a threat next door.

7.18: Southfield Code was forced to battle hard to get to Schooldays last week, but it proved again he’s a force either dominating (as in a trial stakes when beating Antigua Fire) or from off the pace. Take Kevin Hutton’s dog to make all here from Causeway Sergie.

7.38: Sparta Master found all sorts of problems last week in defeat in the heats – and actually did well to qualify. He needs to cope with a host of early pacers but with any sort of run picks these off in this Sussex Cup semi. Sharon Thompson’s dog is a powerhouse.

7:58: A competitive Regency semi could see Beechgrove Bell get first run. She’s won both races post-lockdown and her trademark battling qualities – and speed – can soon secure a decent pitch. Tom Levers’ dog might be tough to dislodge thereafter.

8:17: King Sheeran could be one for the multiples. Liz McNair’s multiple big-race winner was imperious in the heats last week, bouncing back from defeat the previous week. He would prefer six but Droopys Addition next door will edge inwards clearing the way.

8:38: Another one for the multiples, Antigua Fire should make no mistake. He was brilliant last week and, given a perfect trap six for the Mark Wallis-trained star, stripes take some holding. Roxholme Butt could raise his game to set the tempo inside.

8.54: The first heat of a sprint competition now – and Shrewd Call is the sprinter of the moment. David Mullins’ dog won the Colossus Bets Silver Salver bonus last week at Central Park and the similar Hove contours should suit his powerful running style perfectly.

9.12: An interesting third heat of the Coral Bitches Dual Distance and Playbook has every chance to dominate. Mark Wallis’s bitch was caught in a prep trial, so needs a decent lead over a trip which does test her stamina – but she certainly needs catching.

9:28: The final Coral Sprint Trophy heat and Lambeth Way makes a welcome return to the track. He’s a star sprinter with a great strike-rate and, set to improve on trials, gets the vote to preserve a solid record at the Sussex track. He’ll improve for the outing, too.
