JONATHAN HOBBS: The semi-finals of the ‘North East Derby’, plus the heats of three other competitions, make Newcastle the centre of attention for greyhound fans tonight. All the action is on RPGTV from 6pm.
Most focus will be on the second semi-final of the showpiece Alconex All England Cup over 480m, a race which would befit the final. It really is top drawer with big-race winners aplenty and huge local interest.
Defending champion Droopys Verve, Nottingham Puppy Classic winner Ice On Fire and Sunderland Classic winner Velvet Juliet take on fastest heat winner Bramble Reggie in a corker. All are likely winners, but perhaps the value lies elsewhere.
Supporting the Alconex All England Cup semis are the heats of the Mark Lennox Memorial Puppy Trophy, Aquajet Great North Run and PBU Ltd. Angel Of The North Oaks – and the entry for all these events is strong.
A detailed look at the semi-finals of the All England Cup are below, but in terms of any ante-post wager a bet on Forest Jason in the main event (All England Cup) and defending champion Geelo Blissful (Angel Of The North) could be the call.
Both will be plenty shorter in the final – if coming through their qualifiers.
Newcastle
7.57 Droopys Nadal failed to trap as well as he can in the heats, but came through to pass the unfortunate Bramble Milburn. The draw tonight looks good and a lead looks on the cards for Angela Harrison’s dog, especially with both Roxholme Jim and Nadurra Ross heading for the midfield. Nadal can serve it up outside with a solo on the cards. Payyaway Kane is in tip-top form and can chase stripes home.

8.13 The John McLachlan-trained Nadurra Dutch won his heat in good style and has a plum pitch inside. If trapping better than the classy Droopys Verve, he could soon be pitching for a position and the rails draw could be to his advantage. Ice On Fire and Bramble Reggie are both capable of going bingo from the boxes. Velvet Juliet has the all-round speed to always be a threat.

Roxholme Glory and Forest Jason could have a great battle here. Both are likely improvers after a short spell off before the event, with Jason probably have more scope for improvement given his last run in August. Key will be getting round Grogeen Country, but Julie Bateson’s dog has all-round speed and takes some holding if turning in a pitch, perhaps even leading up. Equally, Roxholme Glory turns the tables himself with a start.
