JONATHAN HOBBS: Romford stages a top-class night of greyhound racing this evening with three finals including the Coral Essex Vase and Mitch Millward Marathon.
Both finals look really competitive and, typically on a big Friday night on London Road, the supporting card is strong – a total of 16 races to get stuck into for the Romford faithful and those watching in the shops, at home via RPGTV, or the streaming services available. You need not miss a thing!
The £10,000 Essex Vase Final is the most valuable race on the card, but great to see two of greyhound racing’s most loyal and popular owners remembered on the card tonight in Mitch Millward (Millwards Master, Millwards Teddy, Millwards Davy) and Dick Barfoot (Adageo Bob, Glanmire Lad, Adageo). Both loved Romford and are much missed by family and friends – and the sport.
So to tonight’s card . . . and a few tasty bets stand out.
Romford
7.03: It could be a good night for the Paul Young kennel and Bubbly Owen looks to have a decent chance in this Winner Of One Standard. He won well last week and the draw inside catches the eye. He’s improved of late and can continue the progress.
Play: Bubbly Owen
7.49: Desperado Rocco ran behind a good winner last week in Antigua Sky and should improve. Led by Ballymac Camdon then, Patrick Janssens’ runner might dictate terms tonight having recently stepped up in trip and might be tough to peg back.
Play: Desperado Rocco
8.38: Bubbly Cain could be another Paul Young winner. He’s a real improver with just four races on the card, but boasts two wins already and ran amok last week in the heats. The same red-jacket draw looks a real advantage and the pup can double up in the final.
Play: Bubbly Cain
8.53: Another decider now with the Mitch Millward Marathon Final and a hugely competitive one at that. The heart says Goldies Hotspur to crown a great career potentially, although might Avastorm make all? Mark Wallis’s bitch showed great early speed last week and this draw make-up suggests the black jacket could escape again. Skilful Sandie needs to get round the pacing-up Drive On Betsy, while the likes of Goldies Hotspur, Aayamza Breeze and Burgess Honey be will be looking to give the likes of Skilful Sandie and Avastorm a start and a beating, which might not be easy.
Play: Avastorm
9.08: The Coral Essex Vase Final now and another competitive final. King Dylan and King Lennon give the McNairs a massive hand. Both are thriving on the schedule given they are currently engaged in the British Bred Derby at Sheffield – and have been racking up the wins in Essex and Yorkshire! Dylan gets the outright vote tonight given his better early pace. He was hampered when making a run into the turn last week and, again, needs to cope with the speed either side of Droopys Aoife and Perrys Choice. However, in a clean-run race he will soon be handy and ready to unleash that well-known middle speed. Track record holder Sparta Master is respected, of course, while great to see evergreen Shotgun Bullet in another major final. He’s been a real star.
Play: King Dylan
9.41: Antigua Sky swooped late to strike over 575m last week, posting a rapidfire 35.13sec. Upped in trip to 750m here, she might run amok! Stamina has to be taken on trust but Mark Wallis’s bitch could establish a long lead.
Play: Antigua Sky
10.30: Desperado Dan looked a touch unlucky last week when challenging in the Essex Vase semis behind eventual winner Droopys Aoife and runner-up Sparta Master. He was on terms with them just after the line, loves Romford and can prove too much for Brinkleys Poet.
Play: Desperado Dan
Good luck everyone.
