WEDNESDAY LEAGUE CUP PREVIEW: We preview the second League Cup semi-final first leg between SOUTHAMPTON v LIVERPOOL with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
Southampton v Liverpool
7.45pm On paper, this is the far more interesting semi-final and with Southampton crashing out of the Europa League and only sitting in 10th in the Premier League, the League Cup is their number one target.
The problem for them heading into this clash is they are in woeful form at the moment – they’ve struggled in front of goal for a while, especially with Austin out, but lately they have started conceding goals for fun too.
It doesn’t take a genius to think that struggling to score and conceding easily is a disaster! They’ve lost three straight in the Premier League now, while conceding nine, and could only manage a 2-2 draw with Norwich in the FA Cup last weekend.
Liverpool could only manage a draw at the weekend against Plymouth too, but you’d expect a different XI to line up here anyway. The 2-2 draw with Sunderland would worry you a shade before that game though, however they remain very impressive in general this season and it’s an interesting week ahead for them with a tough challenge here and Manchester United away in the Premier League on Sunday.
These two last met here in the Premier League in November, where we seen a 0-0 draw, however on balance Liverpool should have really won that game. The match odds at the time of writing currently stand at Southampton 3.4, Liverpool 2.32 and the draw 3.45 – and we feel that Liverpool are just too big here at 2.32 given the form that Southampton are in at the moment. Going to St Mary’s and getting the win is always a difficult thing to do, however it is a good time for Liverpool to meet Southampton, and they can take advantage of their struggles.
You’d have to expect a fairly cagey start given the tie is over two legs, and it’s hard to see Southampton “going for it” from the start. Under 2.5 goals is certainly of interest at around the 1.9 mark on BETDAQ however the way Southampton have been defending, we feel the 2.32 on Liverpool offers more value than under 2.5 goals.
