The 2,000 Guineas market is set to take a firm shape by the end of this week following the running of two of the main trial races, the Greenham and Craven Stakes.
Kingman ran out an extremely impressive winner of the Greenham at Newbury last Saturday and was immediately promoted to favouritism ahead of long time market leader, Australia.
Such was the ease of his success that multiple Guineas winning trainer, Aidan O’Brien has admitted that he was taken aback by the performance: “John always had a very high opinion of him, even as a two-year-old, and you’d have to be impressed with him. He travelled very well and quickened very well.
O’Brien, who had 27 horses working at The Curragh after racing on Sunday also commented on his horses, saying: “Australia and War Command are fine and we training them for the Guineas at Newmarket. Everyone’s horse has to get there and it’s three weeks away. With horses you take it day by day, but the Guineas looks like it’s going to shape up into a proper race. Hopefully we get there and hopefully we’ll all look forward to it.”
Kingman produced what is being described by many as a Frankel like performance when effortlessly winning by four and a half lengths in his seasonal debut. Unbeaten now in three runs, Kingman now trades at 2.25 on BETDAQ with his trainer, John Gosden commenting after the race: ‘’He’s been in good order this spring and has worked well on the bridle. He’s pleased me in everything he has done. We came here for a trial and he has passed his trial well.
“I was really happy with how he settled, and we were thrilled with how he picked up. Without doubt he has the highest cruising speed of any horse I’ve trained over this trip – seven furlongs and a mile.
“He’s a proper horse, there’s the Guineas and hopefully there’s other races down the other road. I think we’ll be staying at a mile. I couldn’t be happier with him.”
Another big hope for the opening Classic of the season goes on show at Newmarket this Thursday with Richard Hannon’s Toormore taking in the Craven Stakes over the 2,000 Guineas before going for the Guineas.
Also unbeaten in three runs, Toormore was an ultra impressive winner of the National Stakes at The Curragh last September which helped him to claim the accolade of Europe’s leading two year old of 2013. Two of those wins came against proven opposition with the likes of Group 1 winner Sudirman in second at The Curragh, while Toormore had previously beaten the well touted Godolphin colt, Outstrip.
Richard Hannon spoke last week about the horses chances saying: ‘’ Toormore had a spin on at Kempton last Monday and needs a prep. It makes more sense to go to the course he will be running on in the Guineas.
“He’ll carry a big penalty, but he’ll need to win the Craven with a penalty to run in the Guineas.
“Anjaal (fourth in the Dewhurst) also goes for the Craven.”
