PREVIEW
FC Cologne have proved Bayern Munich’s bogey team over the past few seasons and the league leaders know the importance of avoiding an upset here with Borussia Dortmund hot on their heels. Last weekend Bayern took advantage of Dortmund’s 1-1 draw with Kaiserslautern and the hosts will be keen to build on their 2-1 triumph over Stuttgart.
Bayern’s victory last weekend was the second successive in the Bundesliga and the perfect way to bounce back from the 2-0 loss in Manchester in the Champions League. Although Cologne have proved a real thorn in Bayern’s side of late, the way they are playing this season suggests they can exact some revenge.
Jupp Heynckes’ side have been superb at home since August and they have won five of their past six Bundesliga games. Not only are Bayern winning, but they are scoring for fun and in six home league games they have scored 22 times – at an average 3.7 per game.
Cologne are currently tenth in the table and are struggling to replicate their home form when on their travels. The visitors have not won in four away league outings and have shipped 13 goals in those games. Lukas Podolski has three goals in his last two games and he will be Cologne’s main attacking threat.
Even with their impressive record against Bayern, Cologne are just not strong enough away from home to cause a problem. A home win is currently trading at 1.16, but I’d be more inclined to back them in the HT/FT double result at 1.48.
RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Back Bayern Munich in the HT/FT double result at around 1.48: 6 points
Thursday’s Return: +3.36
