PREVIEW
Andy Murray’s date with destiny has arrived and he will feel confident of becoming the first British male to reach a Wimbledon final since 1938. The Scotsman boasts a convincing head-to-head record over his charismatic French rival and, having beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in both their grass court encounters, favourite backers will be disappointed if Murray doesn’t make it a hat-trick later today.

Murray has negotiated both awful weather, which continually held up his clash with the tricky Marin Cilic, and a dangerous draw to get to the last eight with the loss of only three sets. On the way he has beaten the likes of world number six David Ferrer and big-serving Ivo Karlovic so his form shouldn’t be questioned.

Tsonga, reaching the semi-finals for successive years, has impressed in beating former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt, the stubborn American Mardy Fish and talented German Philipp Kohlschreiber, who knocked out Rafael Nadal’s conqueror Lukas Rosol in straight sets. The world number five has also only dropped three sets so far as he bids to become the first French winner of Wimbledon since Yvon Petra in 1946.

British tennis fans have been here before. Tim Henman, like Andy Murray, also made four semi-finals at the All England Club but found himself coming up short every time, even when he seemingly had the ability to beat his opponents. Murray supporters must hope their hero doesn’t flounder under the same weight of home expectations.

In contrast Tsonga will be able to approach the match relatively unburdened by pressure and will be many people’s idea of a ‘value’ bet. However, Murray has proved he is a superior player than Tsonga and has real mental belief in himself. He is perhaps unfortunate to be playing in an era with such dominant rivals but surely this is his time to make his Grand Slam breakthrough.

Tsonga traditionally is a strong starter and the Set Betting market probably offers the best value.
