Charlton’s faith in Chris Powell has been a great advert for giving a manager – especially a new one – time to settle into the hotseat.

The Valley legend enjoyed an unbeaten start with four wins in his first five matches after being appointed gaffer in January, but things soon trailed off and the Addicks added just two more victories in the last 19 games of 2010/11 as they nosedived from the play-off positions to mid-table obscurity.

After a massive overhaul of the playing staff during the summer, Powell has led his troops to four wins and a draw from their opening five fixtures. They are now favourites on BETDAQ to claim the title at 5.1 and another three points at home to Sheffield Wednesday tonight will take the South Londoners level at the top with MK Dons and Sheffield United.

Wednesday have been unable to shake off the inconsistency of last term – triumphs in all three home outings have been offset by losses in both their away days at Bournemouth and Bury, during which they’ve scored just once.

Early March was the last time the Owls won on the road and their travel sickness is unlikely to be cured here. Last season’s meeting at the Valley saw the hosts triumph 1-0 and with the home side in such good nick another home win should be anticipated.

Only MK Dons, who have scored an average of 2.5 times per game, have a sharper attack than Charlton. The Addicks have netted 11 times so far, with Bradley Wright-Phillips and Johnnie Jackson helping themselves to three of those each.

The hosts should be backed at 1.92 on BETDAQ and a 2-0 home win is on offer at a tempting 11.0 in the correct score market.
