PREVIEW
The world’s most prestigious tennis tournament kicks off today in SW19 and predictably most of the seeded players are heavy favourites as they face a mix of qualifiers, no-hopers and wildcards.

The clash between two former world number ones, in Jelena Jankovic and Kim Clijsters, looks one of the more interesting ties of the round. Clijsters won three of the next five Grand Slams she played in since coming out of retirement in 2009 but in recent months has struggled to make much of an impact on the court. Having only played in two tournaments since the Australian Open in January, her world ranking of 47 means she is unseeded at Wimbledon for the first time in 12 years.

In 2008 Jelena Jankovic made tennis history by becoming the first woman to become world number one without having reached a Grand Slam final. She went on to make the US Open final but lost and since then has struggled to establish herself as a force at the top of the game. This year Jankovic is seeded 18th but in eight previous Wimbledon appearances has failed to make it past the fourth round.

Clijsters on the other hand has twice made the last four and it’s little surprise to see her as favourite for the tie. However, at around 1.42 she seems a bit short and considering the Belgian has played sparsely this year and had to pull out of her tournament last week with an abdominal injury, Jankovic looks the value call with guaranteed fitness on her side.
