PREVIEW
Having seen their biggest rivals for the Premiership title crown, Manchester City, fumble their way to an unconvincing win over newly promoted Southampton yesterday afternoon, Sir Alex Ferguson will be desperate to see his Manchester United side steal a march and set out a marker for their own title aspirations tonight.

They face an Everton side at Goodison Park renowned for their poor starts to the season – they lost eight of their first 14 Premier league matches last term – and David Moyes will be without influential midfielder, Tom Cahill, who has often been a thorn in the side of United over the years. The Australian has moved to the US but Steven Pienaar has returned to the club for another spell having made his loan deal permanent.

Ferguson finally saw Robin van Persie sign for the club after a protracted transfer saga with Arsenal and the Dutch hitman is expected to start, as he bids to continue the run of form that saw him win the Golden boot last season. Nemanja Vidic’s presence was sorely missed at the back during 2011-12 and his return will be greatly welcomed.

The Toffees have got a bit of a reputation as being a bit of a bogey team for the Red Devils but the stats don’t really back that up. Everton have won just two of the past 10 Premier League matches at home between the two teams and, considering United’s strengthened squad, Ferguson’s men should have enough to get off to a winning start.
