PREVIEW
Southampton currently languish at the bottom of the Premier League with just four points from their first nine games back in the top-flight, but Nigel Adkins’ side know a win tonight away to West Brom will lift them clear of fellow strugglers Reading and Queens Park Rangers.
West Brom will attempt to defend a solid home record this term that has seen only champions Manchester City get the better of them at the Hawthorns, but they have won none of their last seven league meetings with the Saints. However, five of those were draws and the visitors have won none of their last six league games in the Midlands scoring just two goals in those games, though four of the matches have been draws.
Southampton’s defence has been nothing short of shambolic this season with their total of 26 goals conceded in their first nine matches the worst ever defensive performance at this stage of a Premier League season. If that ratio is to continue it would equate to 110 goals conceded over the season, ten more than the division’s record held by Swindon from 1993-94.
The seaside club have also have thrown away more points from winning positions than any other Premier League team this season, 11, and are the only team to have fallen behind in all their league games.
However, they haven’t really struggled for goals and tonight’s game looks likely to be full of them with nine of the Saints’ last ten games featureing over 2.5 goals.
