PREVIEW
Roy Hodgson will get his England international reign underway on Saturday evening as he takes his Three Lions side to Oslo where they meet Norway for a friendly.
Hodgson has only had a week to work with his newly selected squad, but the English public and media will be expecting nothing less than a win against a ‘hit and miss’ Norway side. Egil Olsen’s team have won six of their last 12 fixtures. The manager will be frustrated with the five defeats during that period, which shows a lack of consistency.
However, after a long and gruelling Premier League season some of the England players could be forgiven for feeling fatigued and this may be reflected on Saturday night. England are without Wayne Rooney, and due to their Champions League exploits none of the Chelsea representatives will be included in the starting XI.
England have only lost three of their previous 21 matches and haven’t lost to a team ranked lower than themselves in the FIFA world rankings since they were defeated by the Ukraine in October 2009, 24 matches ago. The Norwegian’s are currently ranked 24th in the FIFA rankings compared to England’s seventh place position.
Four of Norway’s last five games have had over 2.5 goals, so goals are expected. Even without Rooney, England have enough to continue their fine form and kick off the Hodgson era with a win.
