PREVIEW
Manchester United bid to enhance a brilliant record against Wigan today at Old Trafford. The shock 1-0 defeat versus the Latics at the end of last season arguably cost the Red Devils the Premier League title and was the first time in 14 meetings between the sides that Wigan had got even a point.
United may not have made the best start to the season with an opening defeat at Everton followed up by workmanlike, rather than spectacular, wins against Fulham and Southampton, in which they shipped two goals in each game, but the visit of Wigan should make it three wins on the bounce.
Roberto Martinez’s men lost to Chelsea in their first game but bounced back against Southampton and then shared the points with Stoke. The fact Wigan have never scored away to United will be a major concern for the ninth-placed side.
Wayne Rooney is out injured while Robin van Persie may not start having tweaked a hamstring on international duty with the Netherlands. Even so Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez are able deputies and Man United have only once failed to beat Wigan at home by at least two goals. In the last six games between the pair Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have won 5-0 three times and 4-0 once so we should expect goals.
