PREVIEW

Arsene Wenger will complete 16 years in charge of Arsenal on Monday and a victory over Chelsea today would give the Frenchman his 350th Premier League win as Gunners manager. And, after a turbulent month that saw him lose two of his best players in the shape of Robin van Persie and Alex Song, his new-look side has made an impressive start to the season.

New signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla have been particularly impressive and the defence, for the last few years such a weak link for Wenger’s teams, has been extremely effective, keeping three clean sheets in their first three games and never conceding more than one goal in all their subsequent games. Overall, there is a growing sense that Arsenal are coming back to the boil after a disappointing few years.

Chelsea may sit top of the league but it would still be a surprise if they were champions come May. Roberto Di Matteo’s men have blown cold and hold this term and, sandwiched between imposing wins over Newcastle and Wigan, have been a defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup, a dull 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers, and a sloppy 2-2 draw against Juventus, after the Blues led 2-0.

Put simply, Chelsea need to improve if they are to leave the Emirates Stadium with a result. Arsenal have won one and drawn one of the last two games against today’s opponents at home and pulled off a remarkable 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge last term. With the home team looking stronger and the club’s confidence, buoyed by the 6-1 bashing a largely second-string side gave Coventry in midweek, at a long-time high, the Gunners take all three points.
