PREVIEW
It’s possibly not the Wimbledon final many would have predicted at the start of the tournament but Rafael Nadal’s shock exit in the second round, coupled with Roger Federer’s monster performance to see off top seed and world number one Novak Djokovic on Friday, means this will be only the second time since 2002 one of the top two seeds hasn’t made it to the final.

Andy Murray has already woven his name into British sporting history having become the first British male to get to a Wimbledon final since 1938 and the eyes of a nation will be firmly upon him as he attempts to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Fred Perry and actually win the tournament. He was mightily resilient in coming through a difficult last eight tie against the talented Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 3-1 sets and arguably will be happier to play Federer rather than Djokovic in today’s showpiece.

Murray, along with Rafael Nadal, are the only two active players to boast a superior head-to-head over the record 16-time Grand Slam champion. However, that is tempered by the fact Murray lost the first two of his three Grand Slam appearance to the Swiss maestro in straight sets.

In beating Djokovic Federer broke yet another record as he became the first man to reach eight Wimbledon finals. If he wins today he will equal the Open era record for most All England Club singles wins with Pete Sampras and extend his claims to greatness. Aside from a major scare in the third round against Julien Benneteau, where he fought back from two sets down, it has been pretty much all one-way traffic for the 30-year old.

It seems like a ‘now or never’ moment for Murray as at 25 it’s unlikely he has that much more improvement in his game. He is not going to get a better chance to gain that elusive Grand Slam title than today and the new found coolness coach Ivan Lendl has instilled in him means he should find what is required.
