PREVIEW
Manchester City opened their season last weekend with an impressive victory over a ten man Chelsea in the Community Shield, but surely their focus will have been on the opening day of the league season as they start their quest to secure successive Premier league titles.
City haven’t lost at the Etihad Stadium in the league since December 2010 and it is difficult to see newly-promoted Southampton causing them many problems. The seaside team were runners-up in the Championship last term and make their first visit to the blue side of Manchester in the league for seven years – although it is their first top-flight match since 2005.
However, the Saints do boast a brilliant recent record against the Citizens as from the last five league matches at City they have lost just once, winning three of those encounters, including the last-ever match at Maine Road. That was of course before the Mansour revolution though.
Perhaps surprisingly the only signing Roberto Mancini has made has been Jack Rodwell, but the strength in depth in City’s squad, aside from a fairly thin defence, is second to none.
Southampton have brought in experienced Rangers midfielder Steve Davis, whilst youngsters Jay Rodriguez and Nathaniel Clyne cost a combined £10million which highlights their intent to stay up. A club record deal for Bologna’s talented winger Gaston Ramirez is in place and it would be a massive coup considering the player has been linked with some of the biggest names in European club football, but that deal isn’t in place for today.
Put simply City are in a different class to this afternoons opponents and backing them on the Asian handicap looks more profitable than lumping on at prohibitive odds.
