FC Basel’s shock 2-1 win over Man Utd before Christmas saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s side drop into the Europa League to set up a fascinating European tie in Amsterdam.
Manchester United picked up an important three points at the weekend to keep the gap at the top of the Premier League to two points. With no FA Cup game at the weekend, Sir Alex Ferguson will be able to send out a strong starting XI with seven days before the return leg with Ajax.
Inconsistency and some poor defensive performances cost United in the group stages, but they have looked much better in recent weeks.
Ajax are having a difficult season and after 21 games in the Eredivisie they are sixth – eight points behind PSV. In the Champions League the Dutch won one, drew one and lost one of their three home group games. Ajax’s last home European match ended in a 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid and the result consigned the club to Europa League football.
Frank De Boer’s side have only won once in four games and were beaten 2-0 by FC Utrecht in their last game at the Amsterdam Arena. United are starting to hit form at the right time and will be buoyed by the Liverpool triumph, so back the away win at around 1.86 on BETDAQ.
