PREVIEW
Tommy Haas’ career has been a case of ‘what might have been’. The talented German was one of the best all-round players on the tour in the mid-1990’s, reaching a career high world ranking of number two, but a succession of serious injuries have essentially limited his career.

He plays unheralded Czech player Pavol Cervenak, a man who has played just seven tour matches in his whole career, in today’s second-round match at the Mercedes Cup. Haas defeated tricky Russian Igor Andreev in three sets on Tuesday and should find this encounter an easier task.

Cervenak beat an opponent ranked over a hundred places higher than himself in the form of Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, which will have boosted the 25-year old as he goes for just a fifth career win. But as world number 204 he still has a huge gulf in talent to bridge against his older rival.

Haas, at 34, is well and truly in the veteran stage of his career but he still has a touch of class that was evident last month when he shocked subsequent Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in the final of the Halle tournament. A straight sets win should be on the cards for the four-time Grand Slam semi-finalist.
