With the major European leagues not starting for at least another month it’s easy to forget that, aside from pre-season friendlies, there is competitive footballing action taking place across Europe. This afternoon mega-rich Russian club, Anzhi Makhachkala, take on Hungarian side, Budapest Honved, in the second round of qualifying for the Europa League, Europe’s second biggest club tournament.

There is something of a football revolution going on in Russia now as billionaires pour their money into clubs with the aim of competing with Europe’s finest sides. Anzhi have led the way splurging money, bringing in the likes of former Barcelona ace Samuel Eto’o, Brazilian left-back Roberto Carlos and Yuri Zhirkov, previously of Chelsea, on massive wages as they bid for continental dominance.

Despite that, Anzhi could only finish fifth in the Russian Championship group table last season. They warmed up for today’s tie with a 3-1 friendly with over Kapfenberg of Austria and are warm favourites to see off Honved.

And the Hungarians are only in the competition because Gyor were suspended over licensing problems. Although they are relatively unknown outside of Hungary, Honved are one of the country’s most successful clubs with 13 league titles and 7 domestic cups. They beat the Albanian team Flamurtari Vlorë 3-0 on aggregate in the first round but surely head to the Khazar Stadium fearing the worst.

With a strong international look to their squad, Anzhi should simply have far too much quality and firepower for their opponents and it looks the sort of game prolific striker Eto’o will relish.
