Having seen their female compatriots win against New Zealand last night on their Olympic debut, the Great Britain men’s football team, making a first appearance at the Games since 1960, will be out to avoid an upset versus African outsiders Senegal.

Stuart Pearce’s men were ripped apart by Brazil in a warm-up last Friday and they will need to keep their shape better than they did then. Great Britain captain Ryan Giggs will be making his long-awaited debut at a major international tournament and, at the age of 38, the Welshman will be desperate to make an impact.

Senegal shocked the footballing world at the 2002 World Cup when their senior team beat defending champions France in the first round on their way to the quarter-finals. However, things haven’t gone smoothly for the country since and the side has overlooked the Newcastle goalscoring duo of Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba. Danish club FC Copenhagen refused to give Dame Ndoye permission to play and defender Victor Bindia is a major injury doubt ahead of the Group A opener.

Despite these curious selection choices and setbacks, West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame thinks Senegal can surprise the hosts and Abdoulaye Ba was adamant, ‘We [Senegal] haven’t come here just to be on holiday and we are determined to do well for our country.’

The market disagrees though and, at a bigger than expected price, Great Britain are worth backing to continue Team GB’s flawless start to their home Games.
