Richard Gasquet has never quite scaled the career heights that he was tipped for, having won two junior grand Slams and reaching junior world number one in 2002, but the Frenchman is still a useful player and will be expected to dispatch Grigor Dimitrov with the minimum of fuss when the pair meet in the Thailand Open later today.
Dimitrov is the most successful Bulgarian male tennis player ever and his career mirrors Gasquet’s, in the fact he too was junior world number one and won a brace of junior majors. He was the first Bulgarian male to reach an ATP semi-final and is now ranked 56th in the world. That would suggest he still has a fair bit to find with his opponent who is ranked 14th.
Gasquet has been in good form recently, reaching the final of the Toronto Masters and the fourth round of the US Open. On the other hand Dimitrov has lost four of his last five matches and has only beaten one player inside the world’s top 30 all year. He has also lost to his rival in their two previous meetings.
