PREVIEW
Villarreal have it all to do this evening if they are to qualify for the Champions League after losing the first leg to Odense last week. A late strike from Hans Henrik Andreasen proved the difference as the Danes take a slender lead to Spain knowing that a draw would be enough to seal the tie.
The Yellow Submarine will argue that they are still very much in this tie as the side have an excellent record at El Madrigal. Fans may recall that the Yellow Submarine beat Odense 2-0 in their only previous meeting at El Madriga in 2004. Further encouragement for home supporters is that Villarreal have won their past eight home European fixtures on the spin.
Odense won 3-1 against Lyngby BK at the weekend and will fancy their chances of securing a place in the main Champions League competition. The fact the visitors have already played six matches in the Danish Superliga means they will likely be sharper than Villarreal, who start their La Liga campaign this weekend. However, Henrik Clausen’s side have not travelled well of late and a recent 4-3 third round victory over Panathinaikos ended a run of three consecutive European away defeats.
Even facing a one goal deficit, I fancy Villarreal to come through this match on the back of their excellent home form. Manager Juan Carlos Garrido will need to attack from the off knowing his side need at least two goals to qualify for the main competition. With that in mind, I’m happy to tip up Villarreal with the -1.5 Asian handicap at around 1.67 on Betdaq.
Villarreal also enjoyed a comfortable victory last time they faced Danish opposition on home soil, winning 6-3 against Aalborg in the 2008/09 Champions League.
RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Back Villarreal with -1.5 Asian Handicap at around 1.67: 6 points
Monday’s Return: +3.30
