PREVIEW
Andy Murray’s quest to finally end Britain’s male Grand Slam drought, that has lasted since 1936, takes the player back to Wimbledon where he has been a semi-finalist on his last three appearances. However, he could surely have been given an easier first round tie than playing former world number three Nikolay Davydenko.
The tricky Russian may be 31 years old now and ranked 47th in the world but he is still a more than capable competitor. Davydenko is one of the few players in the game that can boast a winning record against dual Wimbledon winner and 11-times Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. The Iceman has already warned Murray in a press conference that he is out to ‘terminate’ the Scotsman’s challenge and with Murray struggling for form and fitness this could be a closer clash than most pundits are predicting.
Prior to the French Open Davydenko was gradually finding his feet once more after a string of poor efforts, making the semi-finals in Nice before suffering a disappointing first-round exit in Paris. He is yet to play on grass this season and that could count against him. Murray hasn’t won a tournament since Brisbane at the start of the year and while he has generally been competitive in the big events he has suffered shock losses against the likes of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Milos Raonic, Richard Gasquet and earlier this month, in the opening round at Queens, to Nicolas Mahut.
Nonetheless it would be a major surprise if Murray was to lose but, given there is not much between the two in head-to-head contests and there are enough negatives in his overall play this year to suggest a straight sets win is unlikely.
