Sergio Aguero’s late winner a fortnight ago at the Etihad Stadium was a huge goal in the context of Manchester City’s bid to reach the Champions League knock-out stages, but there is still plenty of work to be done. As it stands, City are third in Group A behind Bayern Munich and Napoli, who face each other next.
Having been comfortably beaten in Munich, City have put together a spectacular run of results that has seen them climb to first in the Premier League. Roberto Mancini’s side have won their previous six games – scoring 24 times and conceding only six. There’s no doubt that this City side is very different to last season, but Mancini found the going tough when away in Europe last year. City have not won in five away European outings and with that have failed to find the back of the net for 283 minutes.
Interestingly, Villarreal had never lost three European games on the spin and must avoid a fourth as they go in search of three vital points, which would keep their faint hopes of qualification alive.
The Yellow Submarine beat Real Vallecano 2-0 at the weekend to bounce back from a 3-0 reverse to Real Madrid seven days ago. The hosts have still only won once in six La Liga games, so City will look to take advantage of their frailties.
With the form City are in, it’s difficult not to see them picking up another win here to end their away European drought. My advice is to back an away win at around 1.64 on BETDAQ.
