Roberto Di Matteo’s Chelsea side will be looking to book their place in the semi-final of the Champions League for the first time since a runners up finish in 2008. Chelsea hold a 1-0 aggregate lead heading to Stamford Bridge after inflicting Benfica’s first home Champions League defeat this season.  However, Chelsea may be without up to as many as six first team players as Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba, Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge are all doubts for game. Even so Chelsea should have the quality and strength in depth to overcome the Portuguese team who haven’t won any of their previous six Champions League away outings. Chelsea are struggling in the league domestically this season and the Champions League has been a welcome distraction for them. Since Di Matteo has taken over as caretaker manager Chelsea have won six out of eight games and only lost one.

This run has coincided with the fact that £50 million signing Fernando Torres has again found his scoring boots netting three goals in his last five appearances. Chelsea historically, are a formidable side at home in Europe beating the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool and with the ‘Blues’ only needing a draw to progress it could be a very long night for the Portuguese side who sit second in their domestic league.
