PREVIEW

Although the Olympic opening ceremony is still two days away, this evening’s fixture between Great Britain and New Zealand effectively kick starts Team GB’s Olympic campaign. The English women’s football team are officially ranked ninth best in the world but with the addition of useful Scottish duo Iffy Dieke and striker Kim Little bolstering coach Hope Powell’s British squad, the team made an encouraging start as a unit, when holding the classy Sweden to a goalless draw last Friday.

Both Dieke and Little have put controversy over Scottish players in the Team GB football team behind them after the Scottish FA had discouraged their players from taking part at the Olympics and both have voiced their enthusiasm at the London set-up.

New Zealand qualified for London 2012 by thrashing minnows Papua New Guinea 15-0 over two legs in the Oceania Women’s Olympic Qualifier Final and in Amber Hearn they have a dangerous player. Both Britain and the Kiwis will be aware that a good start is vital if they are make it out of a group that includes the highly-fancied Brazil and the unknown quality of Cameroon.

Great Britain have made great progress under Powell and really should see off their Southern hemisphere rivals with the minimum of fuss and at around 1.4 on BETDAQ they look worth lumping on.
