Defending champions Chelsea kick off their bid to become the first ever team to retain the Champions League in its current guise when they host Serie A champions Juventus at Stamford Bridge tonight. The sides have only met twice before and it was the Londoners who got the better of the Turin side in the round of 16 three years ago.
Roberto Di Matteo’s side relinquished their 100% start to their league campaign with a frustrating goalless draw away to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, while Juventus picked up maximum points once more to make it nine points from three league games so far. That made it 42 league games unbeaten for the two-time European Cup winners.
However, the Old Lady are looking to improve on a woeful run against English sides. They have lost seven of their last nine games at English teams in European competition since 1996 and overall Juve have managed only two victories in England from 20 matches in their history. That includes their 2003 UEFA Champions League final penalty shoot-out defeat by AC Milan at Old Trafford.
The Blues won all six of their UEFA Champions League home games last season, scoring 17 goals and conceding only two in the process. There is no doubt luck played a part in their maiden victory in the tournament last term but such home form is impressive and a narrow home win looks the most likely outcome tonight.
