Manchester City exited the Champions League in the group stages last season and have made the worst possible start this time around when they went down to Real Madrid in the cruelest of circumstances on matchday one.
Their opponents at the Etihad tonight, Borussia Dortmund, won this competition in 1996-97, knocking out City’s neighbours Manchester United in the semi-finals, and made a good start to this campaign with a 1-0 win over Ajax.
However, City will be defending a formidable home record in Europe, having only lost one of 34 European ties on home soil (W25 D8 L1). In addition, they have lost none of their last 32 home games in the Premier League. The Citizens have also won three and drawn one of four home games in Europe against German opposition and overall they have won four and lost four of nine meetings with Bundesliga teams.
German champions Dortmund have won none of their last five away games in Europe, losing all three of their group stage road trips last season and they’ve lost five of seven trips to England in European competition, including their last three.
Anything other than a home win would put serious pressure on Roberto Mancini’s men and we should expect their superior all-round firepower to have too much for the Germans. It seems extraordinary for City to be odds-against for a home tie and the 2.08 on BETDAQ looks well worth taking advantage of.
