PREVIEW
Aston Villa lost the plot completely on Sunday in their humiliating 8-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea who were in no mood for charity over the Christmas season.
That huge defeat aside, Aston Villa have been in good form in recent weeks and have a League Cup semi-final with Bradford City to look forward in the New Year. Today they take on a Tottenham side on which the jury is still out.
Spurs have looked a lot more settled in the last few weeks but questions remain both defensively and from an attacking point of view. Their tendency to let in late goals has already cost them many points this term. Andre Villas-Boas doesn’t seem to quite know how he wants his frontline to look and Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor don’t look the right fit at the moment.
Villa, on the other hand, seemed to have unearthed a striking gem in Christian Benteke, who has kept Darren bent out of the side for much of the season. The 22-year-old’s powerful presence and eye for a goal has been in a factor in their rise up the table and he will definitely give the Spurs’ back four something to think about this afternoon.
The Villans were unlucky to go down 3-2 to another famous Manchester United fightback last month, after leading 2-0, but they showed strength that day. Holding Arsenal at Villa Park and the win away at Anfield this month, combined with the encouraging performance at Chelsea on Sunday, suggests they can hold a Tottenham team, who have lost half their league away games this term.
